Major Education Achievement
Jharkhand’s Big Leap in School Retention: Jharkhand achieved a historic milestone in school education by recording a zero primary dropout rate in 2024-25. The achievement was highlighted through data from UDISE+ and a report released by NITI Aayog on May 8, 2026. The state reduced its primary dropout rate from 6.41% in 2014-15 to 0% in 2024-25.
The achievement reflects stronger school participation and better student retention across rural and urban areas. Both boys and girls recorded zero primary dropout, showing balanced educational progress.
Static GK fact: Jharkhand was formed on 15 November 2000 after separation from Bihar. Its capital is Ranchi.
Improvement Across School Levels
Jharkhand also recorded major reductions in upper primary and secondary school dropout rates during the last decade. The upper primary dropout rate declined from 7.42% to 1.7%, while the secondary dropout rate reduced from 23.2% to 3.5%.
The state secured the fourth position nationally in reducing secondary-level dropouts. Such improvement indicates better implementation of welfare schemes, mid-day meal support, scholarship programs, and school accessibility initiatives.
Static GK Tip: Secondary education in India generally covers Classes IX and X, while upper primary includes Classes VI to VIII.
Understanding Dropout Rate
The dropout rate refers to the percentage of students leaving school before completing a particular stage of education. It is considered one of the most important indicators for measuring educational progress and social development.
A lower dropout rate usually indicates improved literacy, stronger educational infrastructure, and better socio-economic support systems. Governments use dropout data to frame educational policies and target vulnerable groups.
Role of UDISE+
UDISE+ stands for Unified District Information System for Education Plus. It is India’s national school database maintained by the Ministry of Education for monitoring school-related statistics.
The system collects information related to student enrolment, teachers, infrastructure, learning outcomes, and educational indicators. It helps policymakers monitor educational progress at district, state, and national levels.
Static GK fact: The Ministry of Education was previously known as the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) until 2020.
Gross Enrolment Ratio Trends
Jharkhand’s Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) also showed changes over the years. Primary GER declined from 109.2% in 2014-15 to 92.5% in 2024-25, while secondary GER increased from 66.05% to 72%.
GER measures total enrolment in an education level compared to the official age-group population. Sometimes GER exceeds 100% because students outside the official age group are also enrolled.
Challenges Continue
Despite the achievement, Jharkhand still faces several educational challenges. Around 86,000 children remained out of school as of September 2023. The state government also planned a large household survey between November 2025 and January 2026 to identify out-of-school children.
The state had nearly 99,565 teaching vacancies during 2025-26, including over 80,000 vacancies in elementary education. Additionally, around 9,172 schools functioned with only a single teacher, affecting learning quality in remote regions.
Importance of the Achievement
Jharkhand’s progress is significant because improved school retention supports literacy growth, social inclusion, and long-term human development. It also reflects stronger administrative focus on educational accessibility and welfare implementation.
Reducing dropout rates remains important for achieving the goals of the National Education Policy 2020 and improving India’s overall human capital.
