Tamil Nadu Emerges on Top
Tamil Nadu Leads Marine Fish Landings: Tamil Nadu recorded the highest marine fish landings in India during 2025, strengthening its position as a major fisheries hub. The State achieved around 6.85 lakh tonnes of marine fish production, slightly higher than the 6.79 lakh tonnes recorded in 2024. This growth reflects the importance of coastal fisheries to the State’s economy and livelihoods.
Tamil Nadu overtook Gujarat, which registered around 6.43 lakh tonnes of marine fish landings in 2025. The achievement highlights the strong contribution of Tamil Nadu’s coastal districts and fishing communities to India’s marine economy.
Static GK fact: Tamil Nadu has a coastline of about 1,076 km, one of the longest coastlines in India.
Role of Fishing Vessels
The majority of fish landings came from mechanised boats, which contributed nearly 71.7% of the total marine catch. These boats use advanced engines and fishing equipment, allowing fishermen to travel deeper into the sea and increase productivity.
At the same time, motorised boats accounted for around 28.2% of total fish landings. These vessels mainly support small-scale fishermen operating closer to coastal waters. The combined role of mechanised and motorised fishing has significantly expanded Tamil Nadu’s marine output.
Static GK Tip: Mechanised fishing became widespread in India after the Blue Revolution initiatives launched during the 1970s and 1980s.
Districts Driving Fish Production
Among coastal districts, Kanniyakumari recorded the highest contribution with nearly 23% of total marine fish landings. The district’s location near the confluence of the Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal, and Indian Ocean provides rich fishing grounds.
Thoothukudi contributed around 16%, while Pudukkottai accounted for nearly 14% of total landings. These districts possess major fishing harbours and active marine trade networks that support large-scale fisheries operations.
Static GK fact: Thoothukudi Port is one of the major ports of Tamil Nadu and plays an important role in marine exports.
Importance to Economy
The fisheries sector provides direct and indirect employment to lakhs of people in Tamil Nadu. Fishing activities support industries such as fish processing, cold storage, transportation, and seafood exports. Marine products from the State are exported to several international markets.
The sector is also linked to India’s blue economy strategy, which promotes sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth and coastal development. Increased fish production improves food security and supports coastal livelihoods.
Sustainability Challenges
Despite growth in fish landings, experts warn about overfishing and marine ecosystem stress. Climate change, rising sea temperatures, and coastal pollution continue to affect fish availability in some regions. Sustainable fishing practices and strict marine conservation measures are therefore becoming increasingly important.
The government is promoting modern fishing infrastructure, safety systems, and resource management policies to ensure long-term sustainability in the marine fisheries sector.
