Steel Consumption Shows Strong Growth

India Records Strong Steel Demand Growth in 2026: India’s steel sector recorded strong domestic demand during the first four months of FY 2026–27. Finished steel consumption increased by 7.9% to 56 million tonnes (MT) during April–July 2026, compared with 52 MT in the corresponding period of the previous year.

Finished steel production also increased, though at a slower pace, rising 4.7% to 54.7 MT. The stronger growth in consumption indicates sustained demand from infrastructure, construction and other industrial activities.

Static GK fact: Steel is an important basic industry because it provides essential inputs for construction, transport, machinery, engineering and infrastructure development.

Crude Steel Production Also Increases

India’s crude steel production rose by 2.4% to 56.2 MT during April–July 2026, compared with 54.9 MT a year earlier. Hot metal production also registered 2.7% growth, reaching 31.9 MT.

In July 2026, finished steel production stood at 14 MT, marking a 3.9% increase over July 2025. Steel consumption during the month reached 14.4 MT, growing 6.8% year-on-year.

Steel Trade Gains Momentum

India’s finished steel imports increased significantly during the period. Imports rose 36.6% to 2.77 MT, while exports grew 35% to 2.29 MT, leaving India as a net importer of finished steel.

China accounted for the largest share of imports at 30.9%, followed by South Korea at 30.2% and Japan at 14.9%. Vietnam emerged as India’s leading export destination, accounting for 15.4% of finished steel exports.

Static GK Tip: Hot-rolled coil (HRC) is a major flat-steel product widely used in automobiles, construction, machinery and other manufacturing industries.

Alloy Steel Records Faster Growth

The alloy steel segment displayed particularly strong performance. Production increased by 26.7% to 3.71 MT, while consumption expanded by 22.1% to 4.02 MT.

Alloy steel exports surged by 150.7% to 122,200 tonnes, whereas imports increased by 9.4% to 419,300 tonnes. The figures highlight rising demand for specialised steel products in domestic and international markets.

Stainless Steel Shows Mixed Trend

The stainless steel segment presented a different picture. Consumption increased by 25% to 1.77 MT, but production declined by 4.2% to 1.38 MT.

Imports of stainless steel doubled, reaching approximately 497,000 tonnes. This indicates that growing domestic consumption was accompanied by greater dependence on imported stainless steel.

Policy Support for the Steel Sector

Government measures continue to focus on raw-material security, mineral availability and technological modernisation. The Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Act, 2026, notified on August 17, 2026, is aimed at improving the mining investment environment and domestic availability of important minerals, including iron ore.

The Ministry of Steel has also started monthly webinars focusing on digitalisation in the steel and mining sectors.

NMDC Strengthens Iron Ore Infrastructure

NMDC’s 2.0 MTPA Iron Ore Beneficiation Plant at Bacheli has entered its trial phase. In another development, MECON and NMDC Steel Limited signed an agreement for consultancy services related to future projects.

These developments support the broader objective of strengthening India’s steel value chain, from raw-material availability to processing and finished production.
