Mumbai Enters the Global Work From Anywhere Landscape: Mumbai has entered the IWG Work From Anywhere Index 2026 for the first time, becoming the only Indian city featured in the global ranking.

The city secured a score of 77 points, reflecting its attractiveness to professionals seeking destinations where they can combine remote work with travel. Transport, accommodation, flexible workspaces and weather contributed positively to Mumbai’s performance.

Factors Behind Mumbai’s Performance

The IWG index evaluates destinations using several factors relevant to people working remotely. These include weather, broadband connectivity, accommodation, transportation, culture, food and flexible workspace availability.

Mumbai performed particularly well in transport, accommodation and flexible workspace options. Its score was higher than those recorded by some prominent global cities, including London and Miami.

However, Mumbai received weaker assessments for broadband speed, events and happiness, indicating areas where the city could improve its workcation appeal.

Bangkok Tops the 2026 Index

Bangkok occupied the first position in the 2026 Work From Anywhere Index with 106.5 points.

The leading destinations after Bangkok included Tokyo with 96.5 points and Barcelona with 95.5 points. Porto, Vancouver, Budapest, Naples, Medellín, Lisbon and Seoul also featured among the leading destinations.

The ranking demonstrates that a successful workcation destination requires more than tourism attractions. Reliable connectivity, efficient transport, suitable accommodation and accessible workspaces are increasingly important.

India’s Flexible Workspace Advantage

Mumbai’s performance is supported by India’s rapidly expanding flexible workspace sector.

According to the data cited in the report, India achieved the highest score of 100 on the flexible workspace maturity index in Cushman & Wakefield’s Global Trends in Flexible Office 2025 report. India was also identified as the largest flexible office market in the Asia-Pacific region, with 79.7 million sq ft of flexible workspace inventory across eight major cities in Q2 2025.

Remote Work Changes Travel Patterns

The IWG study indicates that hybrid workers are increasingly combining professional responsibilities with travel.

Among the 2,000 hybrid workers surveyed in the UK and US, 51% said their companies offered a work-from-anywhere policy. About 90% reported improved work-life balance, while 80% felt more productive under such arrangements.

The findings indicate that remote working is increasingly influencing how people plan holidays and extended stays.

Connectivity Remains Crucial

Digital connectivity is a decisive factor for remote professionals selecting a destination. In the IWG survey, 38% of respondents identified Wi-Fi as the main consideration.

For Mumbai, improving broadband quality could therefore strengthen its competitiveness among international workation destinations. The city’s combination of transport infrastructure, accommodation and flexible offices already provides a strong foundation for remote professionals.

Significance for India

Mumbai’s inclusion places an Indian city on a global list focused specifically on the changing relationship between work, mobility and travel.

The recognition also highlights India’s growing flexible-office ecosystem and Mumbai’s potential as a destination for professionals adopting hybrid and location-flexible working patterns.
