RBI Report Highlights India’s Shift Towards Credit Cards and Digital Payments

RBI Report Reveals Changing Payment Behaviour

RBI Report Highlights India’s Shift Towards Credit Cards and Digital Payments: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has reported a major transformation in India’s digital payment landscape. According to the RBI Payment System Report, credit card transactions increased 2.6 times between 2021 and 2025, while debit card usage declined significantly as consumers increasingly adopted UPI, digital wallets, and other cashless payment methods.

The trend reflects India’s rapidly evolving digital payments ecosystem, driven by smartphone adoption, improved digital infrastructure, and changing consumer preferences.

Static GK fact: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) was established on 1 April 1935 under the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934, and regulates India’s payment and settlement systems.

Credit Card Transactions Register Strong Growth

The RBI report shows that credit card transaction volume increased from 216 crore transactions in 2021 to 570 crore transactions in 2025, representing a growth of more than 2.6 times in just four years.

During the same period, the transaction value rose sharply from ₹8.9 lakh crore to ₹23.2 lakh crore, reflecting an average annual growth rate of around 27%. This indicates increasing consumer confidence in credit-based digital spending.

Factors Driving Credit Card Usage

Several factors have contributed to the rapid expansion of credit card transactions. The growth of e-commerce, online subscriptions, travel bookings, and app-based services has increased the demand for convenient digital payment options.

Banks have also encouraged credit card adoption through cashback offers, reward points, EMI facilities, travel benefits, airport lounge access, and shopping discounts. Rising middle-class incomes and greater financial awareness have further supported this trend.

In addition, credit cards are now integrated with UPI platforms, mobile wallets, recurring payments, and digital merchant services, making them more versatile than before.

Static GK Tip: Credit cards provide a short-term line of credit issued by banks or financial institutions, whereas debit cards deduct money directly from the customer’s bank account.

Debit Card Usage Continues to Decline

While credit card usage has expanded rapidly, debit card transactions have witnessed a sharp decline. Transaction volume fell from 408.7 crore in 2021 to 133.6 crore in 2025, while transaction value declined from ₹7.4 lakh crore to ₹4.5 lakh crore.

The decline reflects a behavioural shift, with consumers increasingly preferring UPI-based bank transfers and digital payment applications over traditional card-based transactions.

UPI Leads India’s Digital Payment Revolution

The biggest driver behind the decline in debit card usage is the widespread adoption of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI). Instant bank-to-bank transfers, QR code payments, and seamless smartphone integration have made UPI the preferred payment method for millions of users.

The RBI report also notes that UPI QR code deployment increased from 6,782 lakh in June 2025 to 7,313 lakh by December 2025, highlighting continued merchant digitisation across the country.

Static GK fact: UPI (Unified Payments Interface) was developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and was launched in 2016.

Private Banks Strengthen Market Leadership

The report shows that private sector banks continue to dominate India’s credit card market. Their share of outstanding credit cards increased from 67.7% in 2021 to 71.1% in 2025.

During the same period, public sector banks maintained a stable share of around 23.9%, while the share of foreign banks declined from 9.3% to 3.8%. This highlights the growing role of private banks in expanding consumer credit and digital payment services.
