About the G-Mark Good Design Award
The Good Design Award, commonly associated with the G-Mark, is a Japanese design recognition programme administered by the Japan Institute of Design Promotion (JDP). It recognises design across products, services and systems, considering factors such as usability, innovation and social value.
Shabari Naturals’ packaging combines traditional artistic expressions with contemporary product presentation. The recognition highlights how indigenous art can be incorporated into branding while increasing the visibility of products associated with tribal communities.
Tribal Art Forms Featured in the Packaging
The packaging draws on three distinctive Indian art traditions.
- Warli Art: Practised by the Warli community of Maharashtra, this art form commonly uses basic geometric shapes, including circles, triangles and lines, to depict daily life, rituals and community activities.
- Gond Art: Associated with Gond communities across central India, Gond paintings use intricate patterns, lines and dots to portray animals, plants, nature and traditional narratives.
- Chitrakathi Art: A traditional storytelling art associated with Maharashtra, Chitrakathi uses painted images to narrate stories, including religious and folk tales.
Static GK fact: Warli painting is particularly associated with Maharashtra’s tribal communities, while Gond art has a wider cultural presence across central India.
Shabari Naturals and Tribal Economic Development
Shabari Naturals supports the marketing and visibility of products associated with tribal producers and forest gatherers in Maharashtra. The initiative is linked to the Shabari Tribal Finance and Development Corporation, which is headquartered in Nashik.
Its product range includes wild honey, brown rice, pulses, millets, spices and handicrafts. By incorporating indigenous art into packaging, the initiative seeks to connect consumers with the cultural identity of producers while promoting traditional products in wider markets.
The award also reflects the broader objectives of Vocal for Local by drawing attention to locally produced goods and the cultural knowledge embedded in them. Sustained benefits for tribal communities depend on market access, fair returns to producers, product quality and continued recognition of traditional artistic practices.
