Delhi Airport Air Train Project Set to Redefine Passenger Connectivity: Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport in New Delhi is preparing to introduce its first Automated People Mover (APM), commonly known as an air train, to enhance passenger mobility across the airport. The project, estimated to cost between ₹3,000 crore and ₹4,000 crore, is expected to become operational by 2029.
The new transport system will significantly reduce transfer time between terminals while improving passenger convenience and operational efficiency at one of India’s busiest airports.

DIAL to Fund the Project
The Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) has decided to finance the project through its own resources after an earlier plan to develop the system under a concessionaire model did not succeed. The previous proposal received only one bidder, making the project commercially unviable under the original framework.
DIAL will now recover the investment through airport tariffs and other revenue streams while ensuring timely implementation of the project.

Key Connectivity Across the Airport
The 7.7-kilometre automated air train corridor will provide seamless connectivity between the airport’s major facilities. The network will connect Terminal 1, Terminal 2, Terminal 3, Aerocity, and Cargo City, enabling faster movement for passengers, airport staff, and other users.
The integrated system is expected to improve airport operations by reducing congestion and simplifying transfers between domestic and international terminals.
Passenger-Friendly Features
One of the most notable features of the project is that the service will be free for transit passengers. Travellers with connecting flights will be able to access the air train by scanning their boarding passes, allowing them to move quickly between terminals without additional charges.
Passengers who are not travelling, such as those visiting the airport to receive or drop off travellers, may be required to pay a fare for using the service.
Smart Operations and Global Technology
During peak travel hours, the Automated People Mover may operate in an express mode, allowing trains to run directly between Terminal 1 and Terminals 2 and 3 without stopping at intermediate stations such as Aerocity or Cargo City. This feature will help passengers with short transit times catch connecting flights more efficiently.
To ensure world-class standards, DIAL has studied automated airport transit systems operating in countries such as South Korea, Indonesia (Jakarta), Italy, and Switzerland. While advanced rolling stock technology is expected to be sourced internationally, track construction and station development are likely to be undertaken by Indian infrastructure companies.
