New Railway Zone Announced
Visakhapatnam Emerges as New South Coast Railway Hub: The Union Government has officially announced the creation of the South Coast Railway (SCoR) zone with headquarters at Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh. The new railway zone will become operational from June 1, 2026 under the provisions of the Railways Act, 1989.
The newly formed zone is expected to strengthen railway administration and improve operational efficiency in coastal Andhra Pradesh. It also aims to support better freight movement and passenger services across the region.
Static GK fact: Indian Railways is one of the world’s largest railway networks and operates under the Ministry of Railways.
Divisions Under South Coast Railway
The new South Coast Railway zone will include the existing Guntakal, Guntur, and Vijayawada divisions that were earlier part of the South Central Railway.
A reorganized portion of the Waltair Division from the East Coast Railway will now function as the new Visakhapatnam Division under the South Coast Railway. This restructuring is considered a major administrative reform in the railway sector.
The Centre has also approved the establishment of the Rayagada Division under the East Coast Railway from June 1, 2026.
Waltair Division Reorganized
The existing Waltair Division will now be bifurcated into two separate administrative units. One section will merge into the newly created Rayagada Division under the East Coast Railway.
The remaining portion will continue as the Visakhapatnam Division under the new South Coast Railway zone. This move is intended to reduce administrative burden and improve railway coordination.
Static GK Tip: Waltair is the old colonial-era name associated with parts of modern-day Visakhapatnam.
Changes in Existing Railway Zones
After the reorganization, the East Coast Railway, headquartered at Bhubaneswar, will retain the Sambalpur Division, reorganized Khurda Road Division, and the new Rayagada Division.
Similarly, the South Central Railway, headquartered at Secunderabad, will continue with the Hyderabad, Nanded, and reorganized Secunderabad Division.
The government has also modified the jurisdiction of divisions like Guntur, Guntakal, Vijayawada, and Secunderabad to improve administrative efficiency and streamline operations.
Importance for Andhra Pradesh
The demand for a separate railway zone for Andhra Pradesh has existed for several years. The creation of the South Coast Railway is expected to accelerate railway infrastructure development and strengthen regional connectivity.
The new zone is likely to improve coordination among major railway divisions and enhance project execution speed. Better railway management may also support industrial development and export activities through Visakhapatnam Port.
Static GK fact: Visakhapatnam Port is one of India’s oldest and busiest major ports located on the eastern coast.
Railway Zones in India
