Rashtriya Poshan Maah 2026 Begins
Rashtriya Poshan Maah 2026 Focuses on Anganwadi Nutrition: The 9th Rashtriya Poshan Maah commenced on September 9, 2026, with the theme “Hamari Anganwadi, Hamari Jimmedari”, meaning “Our Anganwadi, Our Responsibility.” The month-long campaign seeks to strengthen community participation in nutrition, childcare and early childhood development.
The 2026 campaign places particular emphasis on dietary diversity, protein-rich foods, nutritious hot cooked meals, community accountability and early childhood stimulation. The year also marks 10 years of the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY).
What Is Rashtriya Poshan Maah?
Rashtriya Poshan Maah is observed every September as a nationwide campaign to create awareness and encourage behavioural changes related to nutrition, health and caregiving.
Its major beneficiary groups include pregnant women, lactating mothers, children, adolescents and families. Earlier campaigns have focused on maternal nutrition, infant and young-child feeding, growth monitoring, hygiene and healthy dietary practices.
The campaign operates under Mission Poshan 2.0, India’s broader framework for tackling malnutrition and strengthening nutrition services.
Static GK fact: POSHAN stands for Prime Minister’s Overarching Scheme for Holistic Nourishment.
2026 Theme Puts Anganwadis at the Centre
The theme “Hamari Anganwadi, Hamari Jimmedari” makes Anganwadi Centres the principal community-level platform for nutrition, childcare and early childhood development activities.
The 2026 campaign has five major areas of focus.
1. Dietary Diversity and Protein-Rich Food
The campaign promotes balanced diets containing cereals and millets, pulses, fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds, milk and milk products and eggs.
Activities such as Poshan Melas, healthy-recipe demonstrations and promotion of protein-rich foods will encourage families to adopt more diverse diets. Produce from Poshan Vatikas will also support nutrition awareness.
2. Fresh and Nutritious Hot Cooked Meals
Anganwadi Centres will promote fresh and varied Hot Cooked Meals (HCM) under the Supplementary Nutrition Programme.
States and Union Territories are encouraged to introduce weekly menu rotation, use locally available ingredients and improve food quality and hygiene. Nationwide testing of HCM quality in association with the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is also part of the approach.
3. Community Ownership and Accountability
The campaign seeks to strengthen the role of Anganwadi Management Committees (AMCs) in community participation and monitoring.
AMC guidelines were issued on June 23, 2026. These committees can help communities monitor nutrition activities and improve accountability at Anganwadi Centres.
Supplementary Nutrition Programme Menu Boards will also display daily menus and beneficiary entitlements, making information more accessible to families.
Nutrition and Early Childhood Development
The fourth focus area connects nutrition, early stimulation and cognitive development.
The first 1,000 days of life are particularly important for a child’s development. A redesigned Home Visit Scheduler, containing 34 developmental milestones for children aged 0–3 years, is intended to help Anganwadi Workers provide structured counselling and follow-up.
The campaign will also strengthen identification and referral of children showing developmental delays and promote awareness about the relationship between adequate nutrition and early childhood development.
PMMVY Completes 10 Years
Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) completes 10 years in 2026. The scheme provides maternity benefits through cash incentives to eligible pregnant women to support maternal health and nutrition.
During Poshan Maah 2026, saturation campaigns will focus on identifying eligible beneficiaries, resolving pending cases and spreading awareness about the scheme’s benefits and application process.
Static GK Tip: PMMVY is implemented by the Ministry of Women and Child Development as a maternity benefit programme.
From POSHAN Abhiyaan to Mission Poshan 2.0
The government launched POSHAN Abhiyaan in March 2018 as an inter-ministerial initiative to address malnutrition through convergence, technology and behavioural change.
Under Union Budget 2021–22, nutrition-related interventions were reorganised under Mission Poshan 2.0. This framework brought POSHAN Abhiyaan, Anganwadi Services and the Scheme for Adolescent Girls together.
The overall approach combines technology-enabled monitoring with community mobilisation through Jan Andolan.
Poshan Tracker Strengthens Digital Monitoring
The Poshan Tracker, launched on March 1, 2021, serves as a digital platform for monitoring Anganwadi Centres and tracking the delivery of nutrition-related services.
As of July 31, 2026, India had approximately 13.99 lakh Anganwadi Centres, operated by around 13.30 lakh Anganwadi Workers, covering nearly 8.94 crore beneficiaries.
Children aged six months to six years accounted for about 7.2 crore beneficiaries, while pregnant women and lactating mothers together represented approximately 1.1 crore beneficiaries.
Conclusion
Rashtriya Poshan Maah 2026 places Anganwadi Centres at the heart of India’s community-based nutrition strategy. By combining dietary diversity, nutritious meals, maternal benefits, early childhood development and digital monitoring, the campaign seeks to strengthen both service delivery and community responsibility.
The theme “Hamari Anganwadi, Hamari Jimmedari” underlines the idea that improving nutrition outcomes requires not only government programmes but also active participation from families and local communities.
