PM Modi’s Uzbekistan Visit: Uranium, Trade and New Ties: Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Uzbekistan from August 29–30, 2026, where he held talks with Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev in Tashkent.

The prestigious state honour was presented in recognition of his contribution to strengthening India-Uzbekistan relations.

Long-Term Uranium Supply Agreement

India and Uzbekistan agreed to work towards a long-term arrangement for uranium supply.

The cooperation will also cover:

  • Nuclear energy
  • Mining and geology
  • Critical minerals

Critical minerals are increasingly important for clean energy, advanced technology and manufacturing.

Trade, AI and Pharmaceuticals

Both countries agreed to expand and diversify bilateral trade by addressing non-tariff barriers and investment-related difficulties.

Potential areas include:

  • Engineering goods
  • Electrical products
  • Automobiles
  • Pharmaceuticals

India and Uzbekistan will also encourage cooperation between IT parks, start-ups, companies and educational institutions in Artificial Intelligence.

Pharmaceutical cooperation will focus on public health, biomedical research, innovation and manufacturing.

Education, Culture and Tourism

India’s ITEC programme has benefited around 2,700 Uzbek citizens, while around 400 Uzbek students have received ICCR scholarships, including AYUSH scholarships.

A new Lal Bahadur Shastri Scholarship for Hindi Language was also offered to Uzbekistan.

Cultural and tourism cooperation will continue through:

  • Cultural Exchange Programme 2026–2030
  • Tourism Cooperation Programme 2026–2028
  • Yoga instructor training
  • Traditional medicine cooperation

Aral Sea Region Gets India’s Support

India will provide $1 million and technical assistance for ecological rehabilitation and greening initiatives in the Aral Sea Region.

The initiative is connected with Uzbekistan’s Yashil Makon campaign and India’s Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam campaign.

The two countries also agreed to cooperate in the conservation and restoration of ancient Buddhist heritage sites at Fayaz Tepe and Karatepa.

Defence, Space and Security Cooperation

Defence cooperation will continue through initiatives including the Dustlik joint military exercise.

Security discussions covered:

  • Terrorism
  • Organised crime
  • Illicit drug trafficking
  • Cybersecurity

The two countries also agreed to strengthen cooperation in the peaceful exploration of outer space, including scientific data exchange, applications, education and joint seminars.

Uzbekistan Supports India’s UNSC Membership

Uzbekistan reiterated its support for India’s permanent membership of the United Nations Security Council, strengthening diplomatic cooperation between the two countries on international platforms.
