First Solar Project with Battery Storage in Spiti
Himachal Pradesh Launches Solar Power Project in Spiti Valley: Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu inaugurated the state’s first reported solar power project with battery storage at Rongtong in Spiti Valley. The project has an installed capacity of 2 MW and is expected to generate approximately 36 lakh units (3.6 million units) of electricity annually.
The project forms part of the state’s efforts to strengthen electricity infrastructure and expand renewable energy use in remote and high-altitude regions.
Key Features of the Rongtong Solar Project
The plant is located near Kaza in Spiti Valley, within the Lahaul-Spiti region of Himachal Pradesh. Developed at a cost of ₹4.42 crore, construction began on 30 May 2023, and the project was commissioned in December 2024, according to the supplied report.
The facility combines solar generation with a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). The solar plant has a capacity of 2 MW, while its battery storage capacity is 1 MWh.
Static GK fact: MW (megawatt) measures power capacity, whereas MWh (megawatt-hour) measures energy. These units describe different aspects of an electricity system and are not interchangeable.
Importance of Solar Energy in Spiti Valley
Spiti Valley’s high altitude, remote settlements and challenging terrain make reliable electricity infrastructure particularly important. Solar energy can help utilise local renewable resources and reduce dependence on conventional energy sources.
Solar panels generate electricity when sunlight is available, while battery storage can retain some of the generated energy for later use. This helps manage the difference between the timing of solar generation and electricity demand.
However, the actual duration of backup depends on battery capacity, operating conditions and consumption requirements.
Static GK Tip: Solar photovoltaic panels convert sunlight directly into electricity. Their output depends on factors such as sunlight intensity, weather and panel efficiency.
Battery Energy Storage System
A BESS stores electrical energy in batteries and releases it when required. When integrated with renewable energy plants, it can help manage variations in generation, improve supply flexibility and support electricity availability beyond daylight hours.
The effectiveness of a storage system depends on its energy capacity, charging and discharging limits, efficiency and operating strategy.
Additional Power Infrastructure in Lahaul-Spiti
During the visit, the Chief Minister also laid foundation stones for two 66/22 kV substations—one at Sumdo in Kinnaur district and another at Kaza in Spiti Valley. Their combined reported cost is ₹47.95 crore.
The substations are intended to strengthen electricity distribution and improve power infrastructure in the region. The Chief Minister also announced an allocation of ₹6 crore to make the Rongtong Hydel Power Project functional.
The solar project and associated infrastructure works form part of development initiatives reported to total ₹116.28 crore in Lahaul-Spiti.
