Internet Connectivity Continues to Expand

India’s Internet Subscribers Reach 1.114 Billion in June 2026: According to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) report, India recorded 1,114.17 million internet subscribers in June 2026, compared with 1,092.79 million in March 2026. This represented quarterly growth of approximately 1.96%.

Wireless connections accounted for the majority of subscriptions, reflecting the importance of mobile networks in expanding internet access across the country.

Broadband and Narrowband Trends

Broadband subscriptions increased from 1,065.88 million in March to 1,087.50 million in June 2026, registering growth of approximately 2.03%. In contrast, narrowband subscriptions declined by 0.89%.

The figures indicate a continued shift towards broadband connectivity, which supports digital payments, online education, e-governance, business services and other data-intensive activities.

Internet category Subscribers in June 2026
Total internet subscribers 1,114.17 million
Wireless internet subscribers 1,066.43 million
Wired internet subscribers 47.73 million
Broadband subscribers 1,087.50 million

Static GK fact: Broadband provides high-speed internet access, while narrowband generally refers to lower-bandwidth connections.

Rural-Urban Digital Divide

India’s overall internet subscription penetration stood at approximately 77.94 subscriptions per 100 people in June 2026, according to the supplied report. Rural penetration was considerably lower, at 49.07 subscriptions per 100 people.

Urban subscription penetration can exceed 100 per 100 people because the indicator counts subscriptions rather than unique individuals. A person may have multiple connections, so the figure does not represent the percentage of people actually using the internet.

The rural-urban gap highlights the need to improve network infrastructure, affordability, digital literacy and reliable connectivity in underserved areas.

Static GK Tip: The Digital India programme, launched in 2015, aims to expand digital infrastructure, deliver government services electronically and improve citizens’ digital empowerment.

Telephone Subscribers and Teledensity

TRAI also reported growth in telephone subscriptions in both urban and rural India between March and June 2026.

  • Urban subscribers: Increased from 778.79 million to 792.06 million.
  • Urban teledensity: Rose from 151.47% to 153.43%.
  • Rural subscribers: Increased from 551.79 million to 556.01 million.
  • Rural teledensity: Rose from 60.46% to 60.89%.

Despite the increase in rural subscriptions, the rural share of total telephone subscriptions declined from 41.47% to 41.24% during the period.

Static GK fact: Teledensity measures the number of telephone connections per 100 people. It can exceed 100% because individuals and organisations may hold multiple connections.

Significance for Digital India

Growing internet and broadband subscriptions can strengthen digital payments, online learning, telemedicine, e-commerce and access to public services. However, subscription growth alone does not guarantee equal access. Differences in affordability, network quality, device availability and digital skills remain important challenges.

TRAI’s data therefore provides insights into both the expansion of India’s telecommunications market and the continuing need for inclusive digital development.
