PM Modi Strengthens India Uzbekistan Strategic Partnership

India Uzbekistan Ties Reach a New Level

PM Modi Strengthens India Uzbekistan Strategic Partnership: Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Uzbekistan from August 29 to 30, 2026, marking an important phase in India’s engagement with Central Asia. During his talks with Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, both countries expanded cooperation across trade, energy, defence, technology, healthcare, education and connectivity.

A major outcome was the decision to elevate bilateral relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. The upgraded framework is expected to provide greater institutional support for long-term cooperation between the two countries.

Static GK fact: Uzbekistan is a landlocked country in Central Asia. Its capital and largest city is Tashkent.

Uzbekistan Confers Its Highest Honour

During the visit, President Mirziyoyev conferred the Oliy Darajali Do‘stlik Order on Prime Minister Modi. The Uzbek honour, meaning the Order of Supreme Friendship, recognises significant contributions to friendship and cooperation between Uzbekistan and other countries.

Prime Minister Modi dedicated the distinction to the people of India and the longstanding civilisational relationship between the two nations. He also highlighted the significance of Dostlik, meaning friendship, as a symbol of bilateral ties.

Uranium Cooperation Gains Importance

Energy security emerged as a key area of the partnership. India and Uzbekistan agreed to work towards a long-term arrangement for uranium supplies, supporting India’s expanding nuclear energy programme.

The two sides also identified opportunities involving nuclear energy, mining, geology and critical minerals. Such cooperation is strategically important because critical minerals are essential for advanced manufacturing, clean-energy technologies and emerging industries.

Static GK Tip: Uranium is the principal fuel used in conventional nuclear fission reactors for generating electricity.

Trade and Technology Receive Fresh Push

India and Uzbekistan agreed to broaden bilateral trade by addressing non-tariff barriers and investment-related difficulties. Potential areas include engineering products, electrical goods, automobiles and pharmaceuticals.

Technology cooperation will also receive greater attention, particularly in artificial intelligence. IT parks, start-ups, companies and educational institutions from both countries are expected to explore joint initiatives in AI and digital technologies.

Education Culture and Tourism

People-to-people relations remain an important component of the partnership. Around 2,700 Uzbek citizens have benefited from India’s ITEC programme, while approximately 400 Uzbek students have received ICCR scholarships, including AYUSH scholarships.

India also introduced the Lal Bahadur Shastri Scholarship for Hindi Language. Cultural and tourism cooperation will continue through the Cultural Exchange Programme 2026–2030 and Tourism Cooperation Programme 2026–2028.

Environment Defence and Global Cooperation

India announced $1 million along with technical assistance for ecological rehabilitation and greening initiatives in the Aral Sea Region. The initiative is connected with Uzbekistan’s Yashil Makon campaign and India’s Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam initiative.

Defence cooperation will continue through the Dustlik joint military exercise, while security discussions cover terrorism, organised crime, drug trafficking and cybersecurity. Both countries also agreed to expand peaceful space cooperation and Uzbekistan reiterated its support for India’s permanent membership of the United Nations Security Council.
