Indigenous HPV Test Receives International Validation
India Validates Indigenous HPV Test for Affordable Cervical Cancer Screening: Researchers from AIIMS New Delhi, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), France have successfully validated an indigenous Human Papillomavirus (HPV) test for cervical cancer screening.
The validated test, Truenat HR-HPV-Plus, meets international performance standards and is expected to provide an affordable and accessible screening solution for women across India, especially those above 30 years of age.

Why HPV Screening Remains Essential
HPV infection is the leading cause of cervical cancer, one of the most common cancers affecting women worldwide. Although HPV vaccination helps prevent future infections, regular screening remains essential for early detection of precancerous changes.
Experts recommend HPV screening for women aged 30 years and above, as early diagnosis significantly improves treatment outcomes and reduces mortality.

Features of Truenat HR-HPV-Plus
Among four indigenous HPV DNA tests evaluated, Truenat HR-HPV-Plus, developed by Molbio Diagnostics, was the only test to satisfy all international validation criteria established by WHO and IARC.
The test detects eight high-risk HPV types responsible for nearly 95% of cervical cancer cases. It also demonstrated high accuracy, reliable reproducibility across laboratories, and suitability for use in district and sub-district healthcare facilities.

Validation Study and Public Health Significance
The validation study was supported by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) and Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC) under the Grand Challenges India initiative.
Researchers evaluated four Indian-developed HPV tests using 1,159 cervical samples, including confirmed precancerous lesions and cervical cancer cases. The study followed internationally accepted WHO and IARC validation benchmarks.
