India’s global ranking
India Emerges as Fifth Largest Defence Spender: India became the fifth-largest defence spender in 2025, as per the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) report. The country’s military expenditure reached $92.1 billion, accounting for 3.2% of global spending.
Only the United States, China, Russia, and Germany ranked above India. This reflects India’s growing emphasis on national security and military strength.
Static GK fact: SIPRI is an international institute based in Stockholm, Sweden, known for tracking global military trends.
Rising defence expenditure
India’s defence spending increased by 8.9% compared to 2024, showing a steady upward trend. This rise is linked to modernisation, emergency procurements, and operational readiness.
The impact of Operation Sindoor and regional tensions pushed India to strengthen its combat preparedness. Investments in fighter aircraft and advanced defence systems also saw a significant boost.
Static GK Tip: India has one of the largest standing armed forces in the world.
Comparison with Pakistan
Pakistan’s defence spending rose by 11% in 2025, reaching $11.9 billion, ranking 31st globally. Despite this increase, India’s spending remains nearly eight times higher.
Pakistan’s expenditure is largely driven by imports from China, especially in aircraft and missile systems. This highlights the ongoing strategic rivalry in South Asia.
Global defence trends
Global military expenditure reached a record $2.887 trillion in 2025, the highest ever recorded. The United States, China, and Russia together accounted for over 50% of total spending.
Europe saw the fastest growth due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, while China increased its defence budget to $336 billion. These trends indicate rising global security concerns.
Static GK fact: The United States remains the world’s largest defence spender, contributing the highest share globally.
India’s arms import strategy
India continues to be the second-largest importer of major weapons, despite a slight decline in imports. Between 2016–20 and 2021–25, imports fell by about 4%, but India still held 8.2% of global share.
There is a clear shift away from Russia, with increased procurement from France, Israel, and the United States. This diversification improves strategic autonomy and technological access.
Budget allocation and future focus
In the Union Budget 2026–27, India allocated around ₹7.85 lakh crore for defence. Major spending areas include fighter jets, submarines, drones, missiles, and smart weapons systems.
The focus is on achieving self-reliance under ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’, along with enhancing indigenous defence manufacturing. Strengthening maritime and air capabilities remains a priority.
Way ahead
India’s rising defence expenditure reflects its role as a key global and regional power. However, balancing security needs with economic priorities is crucial.
Future strategies must emphasise technology, innovation, and domestic production to ensure long-term sustainability.
