IAF Builds Indigenous Strength Through a 930 Firm Maintenance Network: The Indian Air Force (IAF) is expanding its domestic maintenance ecosystem to reduce dependence on overseas supply chains and strengthen defence self-reliance. Around 930 Indian companies are now contributing to the manufacture and maintenance of spare parts used by the IAF.

These firms support requirements across mechanical, electrical, electronic and rubber components, helping improve the availability of critical aircraft and equipment.

Indigenous Spare Parts Production

The IAF has achieved substantial progress in domestic production of aircraft-related components. More than 62,300 spare parts have been manufactured within India.

Indigenous production now covers about 97% of frequently used operational spares and approximately 93% of mandatory overhaul spares. This reduces exposure to international supply disruptions and supports faster availability of components.

AI Enables Predictive Maintenance

The IAF is incorporating Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Digital Twin technology into aircraft maintenance. These technologies can help technical teams continuously assess equipment condition and identify possible faults before they develop into major failures.

The approach represents a shift from conventional reactive maintenance towards predictive maintenance. Better forecasting of maintenance requirements can improve aircraft availability and operational preparedness.

3D Printing Supports Rapid Production

Materials including aluminium, steel and titanium alloys can be used in additive manufacturing. The technology can shorten production timelines and reduce dependence on foreign Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) for selected requirements.

MSMEs and Startups Join Defence Innovation

The IAF is also increasing participation from MSMEs and startups through defence innovation programmes. Around 180 projects are being pursued under initiatives associated with Make, iDEX and the Technology Development Fund (TDF).

These projects have generated business opportunities exceeding ₹17,000 crore for India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem. Greater participation of domestic companies also expands the technological base available to the armed forces.

Collaboration With Research Institutions

The IAF is working with leading academic and defence research institutions to develop indigenous technologies. Organisations and institutions including IITs, IISc, DIAT and MILIT are involved in technology development and innovation.

Such partnerships connect operational requirements with research capabilities and industrial manufacturing.
