FAO Food Price Index Rises in July
FAO Food Price Index Climbs to Highest Level Since Early 2023: The FAO Food Price Index increased to 131.1 points in July 2026, up from 130.3 points in June. The monthly rise was 0.6%, taking the index to its highest level since January 2023.
The increase was mainly driven by higher prices of wheat, vegetable oils and sugar, while meat and dairy prices recorded declines. Despite the recent increase, the index remained 18.2% below its March 2022 peak.
Static GK fact: The FAO Food Price Index tracks monthly changes in international prices of a basket of major food commodities.
Wheat Leads the Cereal Price Increase
The FAO Cereal Price Index increased by 3.4% in July. Wheat prices alone climbed 5.8%, becoming an important contributor to the overall rise in food prices.
The increase was linked to concerns over Black Sea export disruptions and unfavourable weather in important producing regions. Since the Black Sea region is a major source of internationally traded grains, disruptions can influence global wheat supplies and prices.
Vegetable Oil Prices Reach Four Year High
The FAO Vegetable Oil Price Index rose by 2% in July, reaching its highest level in around four years. Higher crude oil prices and increasing demand for biodiesel supported prices of palm and soybean oils.
However, prices of rapeseed and sunflower oil declined during the month. The movement highlights the strong connection between food commodities, energy markets and biofuel demand.
Sugar Prices Rise on Weather Concerns
The FAO Sugar Price Index increased by 5.6% in July. Concerns over production conditions in Europe and Asia, along with expectations of stronger ethanol demand in Brazil, contributed to the rise.
Static GK Tip: Brazil is a major global producer and exporter of sugar and is also a leading producer of ethanol from sugarcane.
Meat and Dairy Prices Decline
The increase in the overall index was moderated by lower prices of meat and dairy products. The FAO Meat Price Index fell by 2.8% from its record level in June.
Prices of poultry, pig and bovine meat declined, while sheep meat prices reached a record high because of restricted export supplies from Oceania. The FAO Dairy Price Index also decreased by 0.7%.
Key Factors Behind Global Food Prices
Several factors are influencing international food markets in 2026. These include adverse weather, geopolitical tensions, possible disruptions to Black Sea grain exports, crude oil prices and changing biofuel demand.
The developments are important for food-importing countries because international commodity prices can influence domestic food inflation, consumer expenditure and agricultural markets.
