India’s Dedicated Freight Rail Backbone
Dedicated Freight Corridors Strengthen India’s Logistics Network: India has completed a 2,843-km dedicated freight rail network through two major corridors. The Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC) extends for 1,506 km from Dadri to Jawaharlal Nehru Port Terminal (JNPT), while the Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (EDFC) covers 1,337 km from Ludhiana to Sonnagar.
Dedicated Freight Corridors are specialised railway routes designed exclusively for freight movement. Unlike conventional railway lines that accommodate both passenger and goods trains, DFCs provide dedicated capacity for cargo, allowing the operation of longer, heavier and double-stack container trains.
The EDFC strengthens the mineral and industrial connection between northern India and eastern mineral-producing regions. The WDFC supports the manufacturing and export corridor linking northern industrial centres with western ports.

PM GatiShakti and Multimodal Connectivity
The PM GatiShakti National Master Plan, launched in 2021, uses GIS-based planning to improve multimodal connectivity to economic zones. It integrates satellite imagery, geospatial information and infrastructure data to improve coordination among ministries and agencies.
According to the source, 58 Central Ministries/Departments and all 36 States and Union Territories have been onboarded, with nearly 22,000 data layers integrated. The Network Planning Group has evaluated 352 infrastructure projects worth ₹16.1 lakh crore, with 201 sanctioned and 167 under implementation.
DFCs and Logistics Efficiency
One of the biggest advantages of DFCs is that they release capacity on conventional railway routes by shifting freight traffic to dedicated tracks. Average DFC traffic increased from 247 trains per day in 2023–24 to 443 trains per day in August 2026.
The WDFC alone was handling around 210 trains daily, representing nearly 88% of its capacity even before complete commissioning.
These corridors can reduce inventory requirements, improve supply-chain reliability, lower road congestion and fuel consumption, reduce logistics emissions and expand the market reach of manufacturing units.

Connecting Ports and Industrial Corridors
The economic potential of DFCs increases when they are integrated with Sagarmala, Bharatmala and Multimodal Logistics Parks. Sagarmala promotes port-led development and covers 12 major ports and around 200 non-major ports.
The WDFC can extend its influence beyond JNPT by connecting with western ports such as Mundra, Kandla, Pipavav and Hazira, with future connectivity envisaged towards Vadhavan.
Such integration can create a wider North-West India maritime freight network linking manufacturing centres with major ports.
Economic Importance of Freight Corridors
India’s logistics costs were estimated at 7.97% of GDP in 2023–24, equivalent to approximately ₹24.01 lakh crore.
The estimated average freight cost was ₹1.96 per tonne-km by rail, compared with ₹11.03 by road and ₹1.80 through waterways. Therefore, shifting suitable long-distance cargo from roads to rail can generate significant transportation savings.
Industries Set to Benefit
The WDFC passes through important industrial regions of Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Maharashtra. Major beneficiaries can include automobiles and auto components, engineering goods, textiles and apparel, chemicals and consumer goods.
Reliable rail connectivity can help automobile manufacturers move vehicles and components efficiently towards western ports. Gujarat’s petrochemical and manufacturing clusters can also benefit from stronger port-rail integration.
Future Dedicated Freight Corridors
Indian Railways has identified three additional corridors for detailed project examination:
- East Coast Corridor: Kharagpur–Vijayawada
- East-West Corridor: Palghar–Bhusawal–Nagpur–Kharagpur–Dankuni and Rajkharsawan–Kalipahari–Andal
- North-South Corridor: Vijayawada–Nagpur–Itarsi
The 2,052-km Dankuni–Surat DFC, identified in Budget 2026–27, could establish another east-west freight link between India’s mineral and industrial regions and Gujarat’s manufacturing and port network.
Way Forward
The long-term success of DFCs depends on more than dedicated railway tracks. Last-mile connectivity, port evacuation, terminal capacity, warehousing, road interfaces and customs efficiency must develop alongside the corridors.
India’s logistics transformation will therefore depend on the efficiency of the entire supply chain—from factories and warehouses to rail terminals and ports.
