Launch and vision
Andhra Pradesh Mushroom Mission Boosts Agri Economy: The Andhra Pradesh government has launched a large-scale Mushroom Mission with an investment of ₹13,000 crore. The initiative was announced by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu to transform the state into India’s largest mushroom producer.
The mission aims to strengthen rural livelihoods, enhance farm income, and build a sustainable agri-based ecosystem. It is positioned as a major step in diversifying agriculture.
Static GK fact: Andhra Pradesh is a leading producer of crops like rice and horticultural products in India.
Production targets and scale
The mission sets an ambitious target of producing 67,500 tonnes of mushrooms annually. This would surpass current leader Bihar, which produces around 45,000 tonnes.
A total of 1.62 lakh mushroom units are planned across the state. Each unit will cover around 5,000 square feet, ensuring decentralized production and wider participation.
Static GK Tip: Mushrooms are classified as fungi, not plants, and grow in controlled environments.
Focus on farmers and SHGs
A key highlight of the mission is its focus on small farmers and rural households. The initiative promotes self-employment opportunities through small-scale units.
The government is actively encouraging Self-Help Groups (SHGs), especially women, to participate. This approach strengthens inclusive growth and women empowerment in rural areas.
Financial support and subsidy
To ensure affordability, the government has announced a subsidy of ₹5,184 crore, covering nearly 40% of the total project cost. The funding will be shared by both Central and State governments.
This financial assistance reduces the burden on farmers and encourages mass adoption of mushroom farming. It also ensures quicker scaling of production capacity.
Types of mushrooms promoted
The mission focuses on commercially viable and climate-suitable varieties. These include milky mushroom, paddy straw mushroom, and button mushroom.
Milky mushrooms are suitable for hot climates, while paddy straw mushrooms grow quickly and offer fast returns. Button mushrooms have strong domestic and export demand.
Static GK fact: Button mushroom is the most commonly consumed variety worldwide.
Export potential and value chain
The mission is designed not just for production but also for building a strong agri value chain. There is rising demand for mushrooms in Gulf countries, creating export opportunities.
The initiative will boost processing, packaging, and cold storage infrastructure. It aims to replicate the success of India’s millet revolution by creating an export-oriented sector.
Way forward
The Mushroom Mission can transform Andhra Pradesh into a hub of sustainable agriculture. Success depends on effective implementation, training, and market linkages.
With strong policy support, it can generate employment, increase exports, and strengthen the rural economy.
