Ganges Grandmasters Win Maiden Global Chess League Title: The Ganges Grandmasters won their maiden Global Chess League (GCL) title by defeating defending champions Alpine APL Pipers 7–5 in the two-leg final held in Bengaluru. The fourth season of the league concluded on 13 September 2026.
The championship was decided through two legs. The opening leg ended in a 3–3 draw, while Ganges Grandmasters won the second leg 4–2, securing the title with a 7–5 aggregate score.
First Leg Ends in a Draw
In the first leg, Ganges Grandmasters and Alpine APL Pipers finished level at 3–3.
Levon Aronian defeated Anish Giri, while the remaining decisive results included Koneru Humpy’s victory over Stavroula Tsolakidou. The other boards ended in draws, leaving the title contest evenly balanced after the opening leg.
Nepomniachtchi Decides the Final
The decisive second leg produced a major result on the Icon Board. Ganges Grandmasters’ Ian Nepomniachtchi defeated world No. 1 Magnus Carlsen, giving his team a crucial advantage. FIDE reported that Nepomniachtchi capitalised on a positional error by Carlsen to secure the victory.
Another important result came from Stavroula Tsolakidou, who defeated Koneru Humpy. Together, these victories helped Ganges win the second leg 4–2 and claim the championship.

Global Chess League 2026
The Global Chess League is a team-based chess competition jointly associated with Tech Mahindra and FIDE. The 2026 season featured six teams competing in Bengaluru.
The league stage remained closely contested until the final day. Ganges Grandmasters and Alpine APL Pipers ultimately finished as the top two teams and advanced to the championship match.
Third Place
FYERS American Gambits finished third after defeating CheQ Mumba Masters 7.5–4.5 in the two-leg playoff for third place.
The competition therefore ended with Ganges Grandmasters taking the championship, Alpine APL Pipers finishing runners-up and FYERS American Gambits securing third place.
