World Tourism Day 2026
World Tourism Day 2026 Highlights Digital Transformation in Tourism: World Tourism Day is observed annually on 27 September to highlight tourism’s economic, social and cultural significance. The 2026 theme, “Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence to Redesign Tourism,” focuses on how AI and digital technologies can transform travel planning, destination management and visitor experiences.
The global celebration in 2026 is being hosted by El Salvador. The observance traces its origins to the adoption of the Statutes of the World Tourism Organization in 1970, while the first World Tourism Day was celebrated in 1980.
Static GK fact: The former UNWTO is now officially known as UN Tourism, the United Nations specialised international organisation dealing with tourism.
Tourism Contribution to India
Tourism has become an important contributor to India’s economic activity and employment. According to Ministry of Tourism data, the sector accounted for 5.22% of India’s GDP in 2023–24.
Tourism-related employment increased from 6.94 crore in 2019–20 to 8.46 crore in 2023–24, representing around 13.3% of total employment during the latter period.
The scale of tourism is also reflected in visitor numbers. In 2025, domestic tourist visitations reached 428.55 crore, while foreign tourist visitations stood at 2.53 crore. Foreign exchange earnings from tourism were reported at ₹2,76,831 crore.
AI Enters India’s Tourism Ecosystem
The Incredible India Digital Platform (IIDP) has been revamped with an AI-based tool designed to provide more personalised tourism experiences. Visitors can access information and virtual experiences covering heritage, culture, adventure, food, wellness, arts and crafts, and rural tourism.
The platform also provides real-time weather information, city exploration tools and details of essential services. Information on registered tourism service providers is linked through NIDHI, helping tourists identify recognised industry stakeholders.
Static GK Tip: AI applications in tourism can support itinerary planning, personalised recommendations, multilingual assistance, destination discovery and real-time visitor information.
e-Visa and NIDHI+
India’s e-Visa programme, introduced in 2014, has expanded substantially. The facility is available to citizens of 172 countries through 88 designated ports, while government data indicates that about 78% of visas have become electronic.
The NIDHI+ platform, or National Integrated Database of Hospitality Industry, provides digital registration and recognition for tourism and hospitality establishments. As of 23 September 2026, it included 63,740 accommodation units, 54 convention centres, 215 food business operators, 1,450 online travel aggregators and 15,531 tourism service providers.
Digital Tourism Partnership With Google
The Ministry of Tourism and Google India entered into an agreement in June 2026 to strengthen digital tourism. The collaboration covers AI, data analytics, digital technology, digital marketing, content creation and capacity building.
Such partnerships aim to improve the visibility of destinations while strengthening the digital capabilities of tourism businesses and stakeholders.
Major Tourism Development Schemes
Swadesh Darshan 2.0 adopts a destination-centric approach focused on sustainable and responsible tourism and better visitor experiences. The programme builds upon the original Swadesh Darshan scheme launched in 2014–15.
The PRASHAD scheme focuses on improving pilgrimage and heritage destinations through better visitor facilities, accessibility, cleanliness and infrastructure.
The Ministry also promotes skill development through Capacity Building for Service Providers (CBSP) and initiatives such as Paryatan Mitra/Paryatan Didi, which strengthen local tourism services.
Diverse Tourism Opportunities
India’s tourism landscape includes religious, Buddhist, heritage, wellness, wildlife, rural, community, cruise and MICE tourism. Improved air, road, rail and water connectivity can integrate emerging destinations with established tourism circuits.
Digital transformation combined with sustainable infrastructure and local participation can expand tourism opportunities for artisans, hospitality workers, guides and local communities.
