Four Toll-Free Helplines Introduced
West Bengal Introduces Helplines to Combat Illegal Collections: The West Bengal government has introduced four dedicated toll-free helplines to enable citizens to report extortion, syndicate activities, unlawful road and toll-tax collections, and illegal liquor-related activities.
The initiative is intended to create a direct communication channel between citizens and enforcement authorities and strengthen action against organised illegal practices.
Helpline Numbers and Their Purpose
Each number has been assigned to a specific category of complaint. Citizens can use the dedicated numbers to report the relevant activity to the authorities.
- 155334 – Extortion
- 155335 – Syndicate activities
- 155337 – Illegal road and toll-tax collections
- 155339 – Illegal liquor activities
The categorisation is designed to make complaint registration more focused and facilitate quicker attention to specific types of violations.
Amit Shah Reviews the Mechanism
Union Home Minister Amit Shah reviewed the functioning of the newly introduced helplines during his visit to West Bengal. The review focused on how complaints are received, processed and communicated to the concerned authorities.
The initiative was discussed during meetings with senior officials in Siliguri. The authorities emphasised that complaints received through the four numbers would be examined and appropriate action taken.
Static GK Tip: Siliguri is an important city in northern West Bengal and is strategically significant because it lies close to the Siliguri Corridor, popularly known as the Chicken’s Neck.
Focus on Extortion and Syndicates
Extortion involves obtaining money, property or other benefits through coercion or threats. The dedicated helpline for such complaints is expected to provide citizens with a straightforward mechanism to bring suspected cases to the attention of authorities.
The second helpline focuses on syndicate activities, which can involve organised groups controlling supplies, contracts or services through unlawful means. Dedicated reporting can help enforcement agencies identify recurring patterns and take corrective measures.
Action Against Illegal Collections
The third helpline targets illegal road and toll-tax collections. Such unauthorised collections can impose additional financial burdens on transporters, businesses and ordinary commuters.
A separate number has been created for illegal liquor activities, allowing citizens to report suspected unlawful liquor-related operations. The arrangement is intended to support enforcement and strengthen monitoring.
Strengthening Citizen Participation
The four-number system places citizens at the centre of the reporting mechanism. By providing separate channels for different categories of complaints, the government aims to make reporting more accessible and improve coordination between the public and authorities.
The effectiveness of the initiative will depend on timely verification of complaints and appropriate action by the concerned agencies.
Static GK fact: West Bengal shares international borders with Bangladesh, Bhutan and Nepal, making its location important for trade, transport and border management.
Significance of the Initiative
The introduction of dedicated toll-free numbers represents an effort to strengthen law enforcement, accountability and citizen participation in West Bengal. Regular monitoring of complaints can also help authorities identify areas where illegal collection and organised activities require greater enforcement attention.
