UIDAI Introduces Aadhaar Face Authentication SDK and Sandbox

UIDAI Launches New Aadhaar Face Authentication Tools

UIDAI Introduces Aadhaar Face Authentication SDK and Sandbox: The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has introduced the Aadhaar Face Authentication Software Development Kit (SDK) and Aadhaar Face Authentication Sandbox at the Global Fintech Fest 2026.

The new tools are designed to help banks, fintech companies, government departments and other organisations integrate Aadhaar-based face authentication directly into their digital applications. The initiative aims to simplify authentication while improving the onboarding experience for users.

Static GK fact: UIDAI is the statutory authority responsible for issuing and managing Aadhaar, India’s unique identity system.

Aadhaar Face Authentication SDK

The Aadhaar Face Authentication SDK is a functional software package that allows ecosystem participants to incorporate UIDAI’s face authentication capability into their own mobile applications.

The SDK supports both Android and iOS platforms. This enables customers using banking, insurance, brokerage and other digital services to complete Aadhaar face authentication without leaving the application they are already using.

Improved User Experience

Previously, Aadhaar face authentication depended on the Aadhaar FaceRD application operating in the background. Users therefore had to install and maintain an additional application during the onboarding process.

The new SDK allows authentication functionality to be embedded directly into participating organisations’ applications. This creates a single-app authentication experience and reduces dependence on separate applications.

Aadhaar Face Authentication Sandbox

Alongside the SDK, UIDAI has launched the Aadhaar Face Authentication Sandbox, a controlled environment where organisations can integrate and test the complete authentication workflow before deployment.

The Sandbox supports testing of:

  • User provisioning and consent
  • Face capture
  • Liveness detection
  • Authentication
  • Error handling
  • Response validation
  • Network interruptions and timeouts
  • Invalid digital signatures
  • Spoofing scenarios

The testing environment does not require external biometric hardware.

AI-Based Security and Anti-Spoofing

The SDK incorporates AI/ML-based liveness detection and anti-spoofing capabilities to help distinguish genuine users from attempts to manipulate the authentication process.

Authentication information is designed to be handled securely and encrypted. Since the system is intended to operate on consumer smartphones, it can support wider adoption of face-based digital authentication.

Static GK Tip: Liveness detection is a biometric security technique used to determine whether the authentication attempt comes from a real, live person rather than a photograph or other artificial representation.

Aadhaar Face Authentication Crosses 500 Crore Transactions

UIDAI’s indigenous Aadhaar Face Authentication technology was introduced in 2021. According to UIDAI, it has crossed 500 crore authentication transactions and has been adopted by nearly 200 organisations.

Its users include central and state government departments, banks, NBFCs, telecom companies, brokerage agencies and certification bodies.

The technology received the Prime Minister’s Award for Excellence in Public Administration 2023 in the Innovation category.

Major Applications

Aadhaar Face Authentication is being used across several public and digital services, including:

  • Jeevan Pramaan digital life certificates
  • Ayushman Bharat beneficiary enrolment
  • Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) programmes
  • Aadhaar-enabled payments
  • SIM registration through e-KYC
  • PM-KISAN and PMAY
  • Beneficiary enrolment under PM e-Drive

These applications demonstrate the growing role of biometric authentication in India’s digital public infrastructure.

UIDAI’s BFSI Onboarding Playbook

UIDAI has also released a Playbook on Ease of Onboarding specifically for the Banking, Financial Services and Insurance (BFSI) sector.

The guide is intended to help BFSI organisations understand the process of joining and operating within the UIDAI authentication ecosystem, thereby facilitating smoother integration of Aadhaar-based authentication services.

Significance

The launch of the SDK and Sandbox represents a move towards seamless, application-level Aadhaar authentication. By providing integration and testing tools, UIDAI aims to make face authentication easier for organisations to adopt while improving convenience for users.
