Taiwan Shapes the Strategic Equation Between Xi and Trump: Taiwan remains one of the most sensitive issues in relations between China and the United States. During the September 2026 Xi-Trump engagement, Beijing urged Washington to oppose “Taiwan independence” and handle the Taiwan question cautiously. China considers Taiwan a core sovereignty issue, while the United States maintains unofficial relations with Taiwan under its long-standing policy framework.

TSMC and Semiconductor Security

Taiwan’s importance is also economic. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) is central to the global semiconductor industry, making Taiwan strategically significant for advanced technology and supply chains.

The United States has encouraged greater semiconductor production on American soil. TSMC’s Arizona operations began high-volume N4 production in 2024, while additional fabs and advanced packaging facilities are being developed.
