Shabdalok, meaning “Museum of Words,” is an immersive museum established by the Ministry of Culture inside the historic Belvedere House in the National Library campus.

Unlike conventional museums, Shabdalok uses AI, AR, VR, holograms, and multimedia displays to explain the evolution of languages from oral traditions to modern communication. Visitors can explore India’s linguistic journey through interactive exhibits rather than static displays.

The museum highlights the remarkable diversity of Indian languages by showcasing the development of nearly 380 languages spoken across the country.

It features the 121 languages recorded in the Census of India 2011, along with several classical, tribal, historical, and endangered languages. The exhibits also explain the evolution of various scripts, literature, and communication systems.

The museum is situated inside the Belvedere House within the National Library Campus in Kolkata, West Bengal.

It contains nine galleries dedicated to different aspects of language development and remains open from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, except on Mondays. Entry is free until 15 August 2026, encouraging students, researchers, and tourists to explore India’s linguistic heritage.
