A Village Producing Chess Talent

Ratusinh Na Muvada Emerges as Gujarat’s Rural Chess Hub: A small village in Mahisagar district of Gujarat has emerged as an unusual centre of chess excellence. Ratusinh Na Muvada, comprising around 100 families, has produced 16 FIDE-rated chess players through a grassroots initiative started by a local teacher.

The transformation began in 2021, when mathematics teacher Sandip Upadhyay introduced chess to village children. What started as a recreational activity gradually developed into a structured programme for identifying and training talented students.

From Classroom Activity to Chess Movement

Many children in the village belong to families dependent on agricultural work and daily-wage employment. The cost of professional sports training was therefore a major barrier for aspiring players.

Upadhyay’s initiative created an accessible platform within the village. Nearly 200 children subsequently became involved in learning chess, allowing the programme to identify students with competitive potential.

The emergence of 16 FIDE-rated players represents a remarkable achievement for a village with limited infrastructure.

Students Gain Wider Opportunities

The chess programme has also helped 21 students gain admission to the Gujarat District Level Sports School (DLSS). These institutions combine education with structured sports training and provide students with a more supportive environment for developing their abilities.

The success of the village demonstrates how grassroots sports initiatives can identify talent beyond conventional urban sporting centres.

Proposed Chess School in Mahisagar

The growing number of chess players has created a need for dedicated infrastructure. The existing school reportedly has only five rooms, with just two currently functional.

The Mahisagar district administration is searching for suitable government land for a larger chess-focused school campus. The proposed facility is expected to be around 8.5 times larger than the present school and is planned to include a dedicated chess coaching hall.

The project is expected to receive support through the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan, the Government of India’s integrated school education programme.

Sandip Upadhyay’s Larger Vision

Upadhyay’s ambition extends beyond producing a few successful chess players. His stated goal is to develop 50 Grandmasters and 10 world champions through the initiative.

He also aims to provide opportunities to talented children from economically weaker backgrounds. The proposed model could eventually attract students from other parts of India and combine chess training with preparation for competitive examinations such as GPSC and UPSC.

Grandmaster Ankit Rajpara Supports the Initiative

The village’s progress has also attracted the attention of Gujarat chess Grandmaster Ankit Rajpara. He has reportedly been conducting free monthly coaching sessions for the children and has continued this support for several months.

Such mentorship can expose rural players to advanced competitive techniques while reducing the financial burden on their families.

Significance for Rural Sports

The Ratusinh Na Muvada initiative highlights the importance of grassroots talent identification, affordable coaching and community participation. It also demonstrates that sporting excellence can emerge from villages when children receive consistent guidance and opportunities.

The proposed chess school could transform Mahisagar into an important rural chess-training centre and provide a replicable model for developing sports talent across India.
