New Defence Aviation Initiative
Puttaparthi Emerging as India’s Defence Aviation Hub: The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) are planning to establish an Aircraft Integration and Flight Testing Complex in Puttaparthi of Andhra Pradesh’s Sri Sathya Sai district. The project has received in-principle approval from the Ministry of Defence.
The proposed facility will support the development of indigenous fighter aircraft and advanced unmanned aerial systems. It is closely linked with the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) Programme, India’s ambitious fifth-generation stealth fighter project.

Features of the Proposed Complex
The Andhra Pradesh government has proposed nearly 350 acres of land for the project. Out of this, 150 acres are located near the existing Puttaparthi runway, while another 200 acres are reserved for a satellite office complex and residential township.
The state government also plans to extend the runway length to 10,000 feet. Additional infrastructure such as an Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower, navigational systems, and meteorological support facilities will also be developed.
The project is expected to attract an investment of nearly ₹1 lakh crore. The facility will handle aircraft assembly, systems integration, ground testing, and flight trials in one location.

Importance of Aircraft Integration Facilities

Such integrated facilities reduce delays in aircraft development and improve coordination between design, assembly, and certification activities. They are highly important for countries developing indigenous defence technology.
The Puttaparthi location was selected because of its proximity to Bengaluru, India’s major aerospace hub. The region also offers dedicated airspace for testing activities, reducing interference from commercial air traffic.

AMCA Programme and Strategic Importance
The Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) is India’s planned fifth-generation stealth fighter aircraft programme. It aims to strengthen India’s self-reliance in advanced defence aviation technology.
The first AMCA prototype is expected between late 2026 and early 2027, while its maiden flight is likely by 2028. Around 140 fighter jets are planned under the programme.
The aircraft will include stealth features, advanced avionics, internal weapon bays, and high survivability capabilities. The project also supports the government’s broader Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative in the defence sector.
