The initiative was launched through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Meesho and BSE.
Static GK Fact: BSE (Bombay Stock Exchange), established in 1875, is Asia’s oldest stock exchange and is headquartered in Mumbai, Maharashtra.
What is Project Shikhar?
Project Shikhar is a structured capacity-building programme designed to guide eligible MSMEs through the process of listing on the BSE SME Platform.
The programme focuses on businesses that have demonstrated strong growth potential but require guidance in meeting regulatory, governance, and compliance requirements necessary for raising capital through the stock market.
Need for Capital Market Access
MSMEs play a vital role in India’s economy by generating employment, boosting manufacturing, and contributing to exports. However, many growing enterprises face challenges in obtaining adequate long-term finance through conventional banking channels.
Public listing provides businesses with an alternative source of funding while improving transparency, governance standards, and investor confidence.
Role of the BSE SME Platform
The BSE SME Platform was established to enable small and medium enterprises to raise funds through simplified stock exchange listing norms.
Compared to the main board, the SME platform offers listing requirements tailored to the needs of smaller businesses, making capital market participation more accessible.
Over the years, the platform has helped numerous MSMEs secure growth capital and strengthen corporate governance.
Static GK Tip: The BSE SME Platform was launched in 2012 to facilitate fundraising opportunities for eligible small and medium enterprises.
Support Provided Under Project Shikhar
Selected businesses will receive end-to-end guidance throughout the listing journey.
The programme covers entity conversion, business restructuring, regulatory compliance, corporate governance, listing documentation, and overall preparedness for public market participation.
This structured roadmap is intended to simplify the listing process and reduce procedural complexities for emerging enterprises.
Significance of the Initiative
Project Shikhar is expected to strengthen India’s MSME ecosystem by improving access to equity financing and encouraging formalization of businesses.
The initiative also supports the growth of digital-first enterprises by helping them attract investment, expand operations, and adopt higher governance standards.
By connecting successful MSMEs with capital markets, the programme contributes to India’s broader objective of promoting entrepreneurship, financial inclusion, and sustainable economic growth.
Static GK Fact: MSMEs in India are classified under the MSME Development Act, 2006, based on investment in plant and machinery/equipment and annual turnover.
