Major Export Promotion Initiative

Pilibhit Emerging as Basmati Export Hub: The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) will establish a new basmati and organic farming training centre in Pilibhit district of Uttar Pradesh. Around 7 acres of land have been transferred for this project at Tanda Bijesi village. The centre will be developed with an investment of nearly ₹15 crore.

The project aims to improve India’s agricultural exports by strengthening farmer skills in premium basmati cultivation, organic farming, seed production, and export-oriented practices. The initiative is also expected to create better awareness about international quality standards.

Modern Infrastructure for Farmers

The upcoming facility will include several advanced infrastructure components for practical and scientific training. Farmers will receive hands-on exposure through demonstration farms and specialised workshops.

• Demonstration farms for practical learning
• Seed production units
• Auditorium for seminars and workshops
• Museum displaying 45 notified basmati varieties
• NABL-accredited modern laboratory

The laboratory will focus on important quality checks like DNA profiling, pesticide residue analysis, and heavy metal detection. These tests are essential for maintaining export quality standards in international markets.

AI Technology in Agriculture

One of the major highlights of this project is the use of AI-based satellite monitoring technology. This system will help authorities accurately map basmati cultivation areas across different regions.

The technology will identify different basmati varieties and generate reliable production estimates for exports. This data-driven mechanism is expected to improve transparency and traceability in the export supply chain.

The use of satellite technology will also help policymakers monitor crop health and estimate market demand more efficiently. Such integration of digital tools reflects the growing role of technology in Indian agriculture.

Benefits for Farmers and Regional Economy

The training centre will be developed under the Basmati Export Development Foundation (BEDF) initiative. It will support not only farmers from Uttar Pradesh but also nearby regions like Uttarakhand and Delhi.

Authorities have targeted training for more than 50,000 farmers by 2025–26. The programme will mainly focus on export readiness, organic farming methods, and cultivation of high-value crops.

The initiative is expected to increase farmer income by improving productivity and export opportunities. It will also strengthen India’s position in the global basmati rice market.
