OneTag Introduces FASTag Portability

OneTag Makes FASTag Bank Switching Easier: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has introduced OneTag FASTag portability, allowing vehicle owners to change their FASTag issuer bank without replacing the physical tag fixed to their vehicle.

The facility became operational through the Rajmargyatra mobile application on 17 September 2026. It was launched by Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari during the Global Fintech Fest 2026 in Mumbai.

Under the system, the existing FASTag remains physically attached to the vehicle. Once portability is completed, the same FASTag can operate through the newly selected issuer bank.

How OneTag Works

The portability mechanism has been developed through cooperation between Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL) and the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).

The FASTag ID associated with the vehicle registration number remains unchanged during the transfer. This means users do not need to remove the existing tag, purchase another one or undergo the physical replacement process.

Static GK fact: FASTag is an electronic toll collection system based on Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology. It enables automatic toll deduction when a vehicle passes through a FASTag-enabled toll plaza.

Switching the Issuer Bank

Users can initiate portability through the Rajmargyatra app by entering their vehicle registration number. The application first checks whether the vehicle is eligible for the facility.

The existing issuer bank then provides a six-digit Mobile Verification Code. After verification, the user confirms the portability request and selects a new issuer bank.

The user must subsequently complete the required KYC and wallet onboarding procedures with the new issuer. After successful transfer, the previous issuer closes the old FASTag wallet account and refunds the balance remaining in that account.

Benefits for FASTag Users

OneTag is designed to provide greater flexibility to FASTag users who want to change their banking relationship. Previously, changing the issuer could require obtaining another FASTag and replacing the tag attached to the vehicle.

The new system can reduce unnecessary tag issuance, dispatch and reissuance, while allowing users to retain the same physical FASTag. It also supports smoother management of electronic toll payments.

According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, FASTag penetration has crossed 98%, with around 13 crore NETC FASTags in use across the country.

Static GK Tip: NETC stands for National Electronic Toll Collection, the interoperable framework through which FASTags issued by participating banks can be used across enabled toll plazas.

Six Month Cooling Period

OneTag portability is subject to a six-month cooling period. After a FASTag has been ported between issuer banks, another portability request cannot be made immediately.

This restriction is intended to prevent frequent switching between issuer banks and maintain stability in FASTag wallet operations.

Organisations Behind OneTag

IHMCL, promoted by NHAI, plays a key role in managing highway-related electronic tolling infrastructure. NPCI provides the technology and payment infrastructure supporting interoperability within the NETC ecosystem.

OneTag therefore combines highway infrastructure management with digital payment technology, strengthening the convenience and portability of India’s electronic toll collection system.
