Maharashtra to Establish India’s First AI-Powered Bird Sanctuary: The Government of Maharashtra has approved the development of India’s first AI-powered bird sanctuary at the Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary (TCFS). The project, with an estimated cost of ₹45 crore, aims to combine artificial intelligence with wildlife conservation to improve bird monitoring and promote sustainable eco-tourism.

The proposed Eco-Nature Park will house the country’s first AI-based bird detection and monitoring centre, enabling real-time tracking of bird populations while enhancing scientific research and visitor engagement.

About Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary

The Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary (TCFS) is situated between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai along Maharashtra’s eastern coastline. It was notified as India’s first flamingo sanctuary during 2015–16 and is recognised as one of the country’s most significant coastal wetland ecosystems.

Every year, the sanctuary attracts thousands of migratory birds, including the Greater Flamingo and Lesser Flamingo, along with numerous resident and migratory waterbird species.

AI-Based Bird Monitoring System

The Eco-Nature Park will introduce an advanced Artificial Intelligence-based bird monitoring system, replacing conventional observation methods with automated and technology-driven conservation tools.

The project will install AI-enabled cameras across the sanctuary to identify bird species, monitor migration patterns, and continuously collect ecological data. The monitoring network will cover approximately 1.5 kilometres of the sanctuary and support long-term biodiversity research.

Interactive digital displays will also enable visitors to identify bird species in real time, making birdwatching more informative and engaging.

Promoting Eco-Tourism and Conservation

Apart from strengthening wildlife conservation, the ₹45-crore Eco-Nature Park is designed to promote responsible eco-tourism. The project aims to create a balance between visitor experience and environmental protection.

Planned facilities include nature trails, birdwatching towers, interpretation centres, educational exhibits, and AI-powered information systems. These attractions are expected to increase environmental awareness while preserving the fragile wetland ecosystem.

Ecological Importance of the Sanctuary

The Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary lies along the Central Asian Flyway, one of the world’s major migratory bird routes connecting Europe, Central Asia, and the Indian subcontinent.

Besides flamingos, the sanctuary supports a rich diversity of bird species, including herons, egrets, kingfishers, shorebirds, waders, and waterfowl. During the winter season, the arrival of thousands of flamingos transforms the creek into one of India’s premier birdwatching destinations.
