Ladakh Turns High Altitude Floriculture into a New Rural Opportunity: Ladakh has introduced twin flower fields at an elevation of around 10,600 feet in Choglamsar and Stakna in Leh district. The initiative aims to demonstrate that commercial floriculture can become an additional source of income for farmers in the high-altitude region.

The fields were inaugurated by Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh Vinai Kumar Saxena on 17 September 2026. The project covers approximately 40 acres and contains more than 25 lakh flowering plants.

Lilium and Gladiolus Dominate the Project

The new flower fields include around 24 lakh Lilium plants and 1 lakh Gladiolus plants. The project is being presented as an experiment in large-scale ornamental flower cultivation under Ladakh’s challenging high-altitude conditions.

The sites are also being described as among the highest flower fields in the world and India. The initiative seeks to combine agricultural production with demonstration, tourism and farmer-oriented livelihood development.

Floriculture as a Livelihood Option

The administration intends to use floriculture to diversify agriculture in Ladakh, where climatic and geographical conditions limit conventional farming options. Commercial flowers can provide farmers with an alternative high-value agricultural activity.

During the initial phase, the Agriculture Department will manage cultivation. During the flowering period, the produce will be transferred to selected self-help groups (SHGs) and cooperatives, which will gradually assume responsibility for cultivation, harvesting, marketing and value addition.

Opportunities in Domestic and Global Markets

The project is designed to connect local flower production with domestic and international markets. According to the administration, ornamental flowers have growing commercial demand, creating potential opportunities for farmers and rural enterprises.

Lilium has reportedly fetched wholesale prices of approximately ₹60–70 per stem, while retail prices can be higher. Such price potential makes commercially managed floriculture an attractive diversification option, although profitability will depend on production costs, transportation, storage and market access.

Choglamsar as a Floriculture Model Centre

The Choglamsar site is planned as a demonstration and model centre for scientific flower cultivation. Besides Lilium and Gladiolus, the centre is expected to showcase Tulips and other ornamental varieties.

The facility is intended to help local farmers understand cultivation techniques suited to Ladakh’s distinctive climatic conditions while also creating a public recreational and educational space.

Rapid Development of the Fields

The Choglamsar field was developed in approximately two months. Plantation began on 16 July 2026, and flowering started during the first week of September.

At Stakna, nearly 14 lakh Lilium bulbs were planted during August. Their flowering was expected towards the end of October, extending the demonstration of high-altitude flower cultivation.

Agricultural Diversification in Ladakh

The initiative represents an effort to move beyond conventional agriculture by introducing a high-value horticultural activity suited to market demand. Successful implementation could generate opportunities for SHGs, cooperatives, farmers, tourism and local enterprises.

The project also illustrates how scientific cultivation and value addition can help adapt agriculture to challenging mountain environments.
