GSLV-F17 Successfully Launches EOS-05
ISRO Successfully Places EOS-05 into Orbit with GSLV-F17: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully launched the GSLV-F17 carrying the advanced EOS-05 Earth observation satellite on 4 September 2026.
The launch took place at 2:55 am IST from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC), Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh. Following liftoff, EOS-05 was successfully injected into its designated orbit, marking another important mission for India’s indigenous satellite-launch capability.
ISRO Chairman Dr. V. Narayanan confirmed the successful placement of the satellite into its intended orbit.
EOS-05 and Its Earth Observation Capabilities
EOS-05 is a high-end Earth observation satellite designed to provide detailed and continuous monitoring of the Indian region. The satellite is positioned at an altitude of approximately 36,000 km above Earth.
Its advanced imaging system can observe the Earth across multiple spectral ranges, including visible, infrared, multispectral and hyperspectral bands.
These capabilities can provide valuable data for applications such as agriculture, environmental monitoring, disaster management and natural-resource assessment.

Significance of the EOS-05 Mission

The mission also demonstrates the growing capability of the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) to carry heavier payloads into higher orbits.
GSLV-F17 Mission Highlights
The GSLV-F17 mission represented the 19th GSLV launch. The launch vehicle stands approximately 51.7 metres tall and had a liftoff mass of around 420.5 tonnes.
According to Mission Director Thomas Kurian, EOS-05 was the heaviest satellite carried by a GSLV to GTO or Sub-GTO orbit.
The achievement is therefore significant not only because of EOS-05’s sophisticated imaging capabilities but also because it demonstrates the launch vehicle’s ability to handle a substantial payload.
