International Literacy Day 2026 Highlights Global Learning: International Literacy Day is observed every year on 8 September to emphasise literacy as a fundamental human right and an essential foundation for education, employment, social participation and sustainable development.

In 2026, the observance marks its 60th anniversary. The occasion provides an opportunity to review global progress in literacy while addressing persistent inequalities in access to basic reading and writing skills.

History of International Literacy Day

The origins of International Literacy Day date to 1966, when UNESCO proclaimed the observance during its 14th General Conference. The first International Literacy Day was celebrated in 1967.

The observance highlights that literacy extends beyond simply reading and writing. It enables individuals to access knowledge, understand information, exercise their rights, participate in society and improve their economic opportunities.

Theme of International Literacy Day 2026

The theme for International Literacy Day 2026 is “Literacy for people, the planet and prosperity.”

The theme connects literacy with three broad dimensions:

• Planet: Literacy strengthens people’s understanding of environmental challenges and sustainable practices.
• Prosperity: Literacy improves access to education, employment, skills and economic opportunities.

Global Literacy Challenges

Despite significant improvements in literacy worldwide, substantial gaps remain. According to UNESCO estimates cited for the 2026 observance, around 739 million youths and adults lacked basic literacy skills based on 2024 statistics.

Learning outcomes among children also remain a concern, with approximately four in ten children not reaching the minimum level of reading proficiency.

The 60th anniversary therefore serves as an opportunity to assess both the progress achieved over six decades and the barriers that continue to prevent universal literacy.

UNESCO Celebration in Mexico

UNESCO’s 2026 global celebration is scheduled for 8 and 9 September 2026 in Chiapas, Mexico, in partnership with the Government of Mexico.

Education ministers, policymakers, educators, experts and learners are expected to participate in discussions on global literacy progress, continuing challenges and policy responses.

The programme also includes the UNESCO International Literacy Prizes, which recognise outstanding literacy initiatives from different parts of the world.
