Indigenous C295 Aircraft Marks New Era in India’s Defence Manufacturing: India is set to receive its first Made-in-India C295 transport aircraft in September 2026, marking a historic milestone in the country’s defence manufacturing sector. Built by Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) in collaboration with Airbus Defence and Space, the aircraft is the first military transport aircraft to be manufactured in India by a private-sector company.

What is the C295 Aircraft?

The C295 is a medium tactical transport aircraft developed by Airbus Defence and Space for a wide range of military and humanitarian missions. It is designed for troop transport, cargo movement, medical evacuation, disaster relief, surveillance, and special operations.

The aircraft is capable of operating from short and semi-prepared runways, making it suitable for remote, high-altitude, and difficult terrains where conventional transport aircraft face operational limitations.

India’s First Private-Sector Military Aircraft Programme

The C295 programme represents a major breakthrough for India’s private defence manufacturing industry.

Under the ₹21,935-crore contract signed between the Ministry of Defence and Airbus in September 2021, the Indian Air Force will receive 56 C295 aircraft.

The production plan includes:

• 16 aircraft delivered in flyaway condition from Spain.
• 40 aircraft manufactured and assembled in India.
• Production through the Airbus–Tata partnership.
• Final assembly at the Tata Aircraft Complex, Vadodara, Gujarat.

This project is expected to strengthen India’s aerospace manufacturing ecosystem and encourage technology transfer.

Delivery Timeline and Programme Status

The first Indian-manufactured C295 aircraft is currently undergoing flight testing and is expected to be delivered to the Indian Air Force in September 2026.

The aircraft will likely be inducted into an operational squadron based at Agra or Vadodara. The programme has also been reviewed by Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, highlighting its strategic importance to India’s defence preparedness.

Key Features of the C295

The C295 is designed to perform diverse military missions with high operational efficiency.

Its major capabilities include:

• Payload capacity: Up to 9 tonnes of cargo.
• Troop carrying capacity: 71 soldiers.
• Paratroopers: 45 personnel.
• Maximum speed: Around 480 km/h.
• Twin-engine turboprop aircraft powered by Pratt & Whitney PW127G engines.
• Capable of operating from short and unprepared runways.

The aircraft also features a rear cargo ramp, rapid loading and unloading capability, cargo airdrop system, medical evacuation configuration, and disaster relief support, enhancing the operational flexibility of the Indian Air Force.

Replacing the Ageing Avro Fleet

One of the primary objectives of the C295 programme is to replace the ageing Avro HS-748 transport aircraft that have served the Indian Air Force since the 1960s.

The induction of the modern C295 fleet will significantly improve tactical airlift capability, logistics support, humanitarian assistance, disaster relief operations, and rapid deployment of troops across diverse operational environments.
