A landfill near Buenos Aires recorded the highest emission levels globally. This highlights the global scale of landfill-related pollution and the urgent need for mitigation.

Why Methane is Dangerous

Methane is a highly potent greenhouse gas with a stronger short-term warming effect than carbon dioxide. Even small quantities can significantly accelerate global warming. A landfill emitting 5 tonnes per hour can have a climate impact comparable to nearly one million SUVs.

Additionally, methane contributes to the formation of ground-level ozone, which affects respiratory health. This makes landfill emissions both an environmental and public health issue.
