India Retains Gradual Global Mobility Gains Despite Passport Ranking Dip: India’s passport has been placed at 78th position in the Henley Passport Index 2026, falling three places from its earlier 75th rank. According to the latest rankings, Indian passport holders can access 56 international destinations through visa-free, visa-on-arrival, or electronic visa (e-visa) arrangements.

Although the ranking has declined slightly, India’s passport continues to perform better than in previous years. The long-term trend indicates gradual improvement in India’s global travel mobility.

The latest ranking does not significantly affect the travel opportunities available to Indian citizens. Passport holders continue to enjoy simplified entry procedures to 56 destinations, making international travel relatively convenient.

Travellers can benefit from visa-free entry, visa-on-arrival facilities, and e-visa systems in several countries. However, compared to holders of stronger passports, Indian citizens may still encounter stricter visa documentation, longer processing periods, and fewer options for spontaneous travel.

Several neighbouring and tourist-friendly nations continue to provide simplified entry for Indian passport

holders. Countries such as Bhutan, Nepal, Fiji, and Malaysia offer visa-free access under applicable conditions.

Meanwhile, destinations including Maldives, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and Cambodia provide visa-on-arrival facilities, making them attractive options for tourism and short-term visits.
