India Marks a New Milestone in Indigenous AK-203 Production: India has achieved a significant milestone in defence manufacturing with the production and successful testing of its first 100% indigenous AK-203 assault rifle, named ‘Sher’.

The rifle was manufactured at the Korwa factory in Amethi, Uttar Pradesh, by Indo-Russian Rifles Private Limited (IRRPL). The development represents a major step towards complete localisation of a defence platform.

Complete Indigenous Manufacturing

According to Maj Gen S K Sharma, CEO and Managing Director of IRRPL, the prototype has been manufactured using Indian-made components and raw materials.

The achievement goes beyond local assembly or partial component production and represents what IRRPL describes as genuine indigenisation. The prototype has also successfully undergone firing tests, including burst-fire testing.

Indo-Russian Rifle Partnership

Indo-Russian Rifles Private Limited was established in 2019 as a joint venture between India and Russia for manufacturing AK-203 rifles in India.

The programme initially involved increasing the domestic production of the Russian-origin Kalashnikov platform. The latest indigenous prototype marks a further transition towards manufacturing the rifle entirely with Indian inputs.

The development supports the objectives of Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat in the defence sector.

Indian Army Trials in September

IRRPL is preparing additional fully indigenous prototypes for Indian Army trials scheduled for September 2026.

These trials will assess whether the indigenous version satisfies the operational requirements of the armed forces. Successful validation could accelerate the wider adoption and delivery of the rifle.

IRRPL has also indicated that improved localisation and manufacturing efficiency could bring forward deliveries of approximately six lakh rifles ordered for the Indian Army.

Production Target and INSAS Replacement

The company plans to substantially increase manufacturing efficiency, with a long-term target of producing one AK-203 Sher rifle in around 100 seconds.

The increased capacity is significant because the Indian Army is seeking to replace its ageing INSAS rifles with newer assault rifles. Indigenous manufacturing can also strengthen domestic defence supply chains and reduce dependence on imported components.

Key Features of AK-203

The AK-203 is a gas-operated assault rifle based on the Kalashnikov platform. It uses the 7.62×39 mm cartridge and combines the established reliability of the platform with modern ergonomic and modular features.

Its reported specifications include a 700 rounds-per-minute rate of fire and an effective range of approximately 800 metres. The rifle is designed to provide improved combat capability while retaining the rugged characteristics associated with the Kalashnikov family.

Significance for Defence Self-Reliance

The indigenous AK-203 Sher programme highlights India’s expanding capability to manufacture sophisticated defence equipment domestically.

Complete localisation can improve supply-chain resilience, develop domestic industrial capabilities and support India’s broader objective of becoming more self-reliant in defence production.
