India Retains Top Position in ADB’s Private Sector Operations
India Leads ADB Private Sector Portfolio with Fresh Financing Push: India continues to be the largest private sector market for the Asian Development Bank (ADB), reflecting the country’s strong investment climate and expanding economic opportunities. The Manila-based multilateral development bank plans to provide around $1 billion in direct private sector financing during 2026.
According to ADB Vice-President (Market Solutions) Bhargav Dasgupta, India is expected to maintain its leadership position as the bank continues supporting projects aligned with the country’s long-term development priorities.
Static GK fact: The Asian Development Bank (ADB) was established in 1966 and is headquartered in Manila, Philippines. India is one of its founding members.
Strong Growth in ADB Financing
During 2025, ADB extended more than $4 billion in sovereign financing to India while providing over $1 billion in direct private sector financing from its own resources.
The bank also mobilized approximately $1 billion from external sources, taking the total private sector financing facilitated in India to nearly $2 billion. This highlights ADB’s growing confidence in India’s economic growth and investment potential.
Why India Is ADB’s Largest Market
India’s rapid economic expansion, ambitious infrastructure programmes, and commitment to sustainable development have made it ADB’s most significant private sector destination.
Key factors supporting India’s position include robust economic growth, expanding renewable energy capacity, increasing digitalization, supportive government policies, and rising demand for sustainable finance. ADB’s country strategy is prepared in consultation with the Government of India, ensuring alignment with national priorities.
Static GK Tip: ADB finances projects through both sovereign lending (government-backed loans) and private sector operations, which directly support businesses and infrastructure developers.
Priority Sectors for 2026
ADB has identified renewable energy as a major focus area for future investments. Financing will continue to support solar energy, wind power, energy efficiency projects, and clean energy infrastructure.
The bank has also expressed strong interest in Green Hydrogen, recognizing its importance in reducing carbon emissions across industries such as steel, shipping, chemicals, and heavy transport. India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission provides a strong platform for these investments.
Focus on Infrastructure and Financial Inclusion
Beyond clean energy, ADB will continue supporting projects that improve urban infrastructure and expand access to financial services.
Investments will target urban transport, water supply systems, waste management, and sustainable city development. At the same time, financial inclusion initiatives will help small businesses, rural communities, and underserved populations gain better access to banking services and credit.
Partnership with Standard Chartered
In May 2026, ADB partnered with Standard Chartered to strengthen supply-chain financing in India. The collaboration includes risk-sharing arrangements for transactions through GIFT City, partial guarantees for rupee-denominated financing, and expanded distributor financing solutions.
The partnership is expected to improve working capital availability for businesses while strengthening India’s supply-chain ecosystem and promoting private sector growth.
Static GK fact: GIFT City (Gujarat International Finance Tec-City) in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, is India’s first operational International Financial Services Centre (IFSC).
