India Hosts BRICS Space Summit to Advance Global Space Collaboration: India hosted the BRICS Heads of Space Agencies (HOSA) Meeting 2026 in Bengaluru on 23–24 June 2026, bringing together the heads and senior representatives of the space agencies from all 11 BRICS member nations. The meeting focused on strengthening international cooperation in space technology, satellite applications, and sustainable use of outer space.

Organised by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the Department of Space (DoS) with support from the Ministry of External Affairs, the event highlighted India’s growing leadership in global space diplomacy.

Expanding the BRICS Remote Sensing Satellite Constellation

The meeting also reviewed the expansion of the BRICS Remote Sensing Satellite Constellation (RSSC), an initiative that enables member countries to share Earth observation data.

The satellite constellation supports applications in:

• Agriculture monitoring.
• Climate change studies.
• Urban planning.
• Environmental protection.

Enhanced cooperation in remote sensing will improve data availability and strengthen disaster preparedness across BRICS nations.

Proposal for a BRICS Space Council

Another important topic was the proposal to establish a BRICS Space Council, which could function as a permanent institutional mechanism for coordinating space-related cooperation.

The proposed council may oversee policy coordination, joint research projects, technology sharing, capacity-building programmes, and long-term strategic planning among BRICS countries.

India’s Rising Global Space Leadership

Hosting the HOSA Meeting reinforces India’s growing influence in the international space sector. Through ISRO, India has earned global recognition for cost-effective satellite launches, successful planetary missions, advanced Earth observation programmes, and commercial launch services.

The meeting further strengthens India’s role in promoting peaceful, sustainable, and collaborative use of outer space while enhancing scientific partnerships among emerging economies.
