First Corps Talks in Eastern Sector

India China Opens New Military Channel in Arunachal: India and China have held their first-ever Corps Commander-level meeting in Arunachal Pradesh, expanding the military dialogue mechanism beyond the traditionally focused Ladakh sector. The talks took place at the Vacha-Damai Border Personnel Meeting Point in the Kibithoo sector.

The Indian delegation was led by Lieutenant General Girish Kalia, Commander of the 3 Corps (Spear Corps), headquartered at Rangapahar near Dimapur in Nagaland.

Expanding the Border Dialogue

Previously, Corps Commander-level negotiations between India and China were concentrated largely around the Chushul-Moldo meeting point in eastern Ladakh. The mechanism became particularly important after the Galwan Valley clash of June 2020.

The two countries have conducted 23 rounds of Corps Commander-level talks in Ladakh, with the latest, the 23rd round, held in October 2025. The Arunachal meeting therefore represents a geographical expansion of an established military communication mechanism.

Taksing Tensions Trigger Talks

The discussions assume added importance amid reports of Chinese activity and alleged incursions around Taksing in Upper Subansiri district. Indian forces have maintained a substantial deployment in the area to prevent local tensions from escalating.

The development highlights the continuing sensitivity of the eastern sector despite progress in broader diplomatic engagement between New Delhi and Beijing.

Recent Diplomatic Engagements

The meeting follows several high-level interactions. On August 6, 2026, India and China held the 36th WMCC meeting, while the 25th Special Representatives talks took place in Beijing on August 25–26.

India’s NSA Ajit Doval and China’s Wang Yi led the respective delegations at the Special Representatives dialogue. The two sides agreed on an eight-point outcome document, including additional Border Personnel Meeting Points and new military hotlines.

New Channels for Confidence Building

These mechanisms can support crisis management by enabling faster communication between the two sides during periods of heightened military activity.

BRICS Adds Diplomatic Context

The Arunachal talks come shortly before India hosts the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi on September 12–13, 2026, with Chinese President Xi Jinping expected to participate.

India-China relations deteriorated sharply after the 2020 Ladakh military standoff, but diplomatic efforts have gradually resumed. A significant development came when Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Xi Jinping met at the BRICS Summit in Kazan in October 2024, followed by disengagement at areas including Depsang Plains and Demchok under a patrolling arrangement.

Peace Requires Continued Vigilance

Despite these developments, the LAC remains unsettled, with differing perceptions, infrastructure development and military capabilities creating potential for renewed friction.

The first Corps Commander-level talks in Arunachal Pradesh represent a broader approach to border management, but durable stability will require sustained military preparedness, reliable communication and continued diplomatic engagement.
