India and Ghana Exchange Two MoUs

India and Ghana Deepen Cooperation Through New MoUs: India and Ghana have exchanged two Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) to expand cooperation in scientific research, education, agriculture and institutional capacity building. The agreements were exchanged during External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar’s visit to Ghana.

The MoUs strengthen institutional links between Indian and Ghanaian organisations and form part of efforts to expand the India-Ghana Comprehensive Partnership.

Scientific Research Partnership

The first agreement was signed between the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) and the University of Ghana.

It provides a framework for cooperation in academic activities, scientific research and capacity building. Such institutional partnerships can facilitate knowledge exchange, joint research and development of scientific expertise.

Static GK fact: The Zoological Survey of India was established in 1916 and functions under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.

Agricultural Research and Education

The second MoU was exchanged between the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and Ghana’s CSIR-Crops Research Institute.

The agreement focuses on agricultural research, education, knowledge sharing and capacity building. Cooperation in this field can support the exchange of agricultural technologies, research experience and institutional expertise between the two countries.

Static GK Tip: ICAR is India’s apex organisation for coordinating and guiding agricultural research and education.

India-Ghana Comprehensive Partnership

During his discussions with Ghanaian Foreign Minister Sam Okudzeto Ablakwa, Jaishankar reviewed ways to expand bilateral relations.

The two countries discussed areas including trade, investment, development cooperation, pharmaceuticals, defence, technology, education, agriculture and capacity building. The engagement reflects an effort to broaden bilateral cooperation beyond conventional trade and economic relations.

Focus on South-South Cooperation

The agreements also contribute to India’s wider South-South cooperation with developing countries.

Such cooperation involves sharing technology, knowledge, skills, development experience and institutional capabilities among countries of the Global South. India has used training programmes, digital solutions, healthcare, agriculture, education and infrastructure projects to strengthen partnerships with African nations.

Engagement With African Regional Organisations

India and Ghana also discussed strengthening cooperation with regional and continental institutions, particularly the African Union (AU) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

Static GK fact: ECOWAS is a regional organisation established to promote economic integration and cooperation among countries in West Africa.

Ghana’s position in West Africa makes it an important partner for India’s broader engagement with the African continent.

Jaishankar’s Africa Visit

During the visit, Jaishankar also met Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama to review bilateral relations and identify additional areas of cooperation.

The Ghana visit forms part of a three-nation African tour covering Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire and Ethiopia, scheduled through 10 October 2026.

Significance for India

The latest agreements demonstrate the growing importance of research, education and agricultural cooperation in India’s relations with African countries.

By connecting institutions such as ZSI, ICAR, the University of Ghana and Ghana’s CSIR-Crops Research Institute, the partnerships can support knowledge exchange, scientific capacity and agricultural development while strengthening India’s broader engagement with Africa.
