Recognition for Gallant Service

Independence Day Honours Recognise Courage in Uniformed Services: The Centre has announced 301 Gallantry Medals for members of the Police and Fire Services as part of the Independence Day 2026 honours. These awards recognise exceptional courage, devotion to duty and actions undertaken while protecting lives and property.

Of the 301 gallantry awards, 272 were given to police personnel and 29 to fire service personnel. The honours acknowledge acts involving crime prevention, apprehension of criminals and protection of people and property.

Regional Distribution

Personnel serving in difficult security environments received a substantial share of the gallantry awards. A total of 197 medals went to personnel from Left Wing Extremism-affected areas.

The distribution also included 51 personnel from Jammu and Kashmir, 12 from the North-East, and 41 from other regions. The figures highlight the demanding operational conditions faced by security and emergency personnel in conflict-affected areas.

Static GK fact: Left Wing Extremism (LWE) refers primarily to the Maoist/Naxalite insurgency that has affected parts of central and eastern India.

1,057 Personnel Receive Honours

The Independence Day 2026 awards cover a broader group of uniformed and public-service personnel. In total, 1,057 members of the Police, Fire Services, Home Guard and Civil Defence, and Correctional Services have received Gallantry and Service Medals.

The honours recognise both acts of exceptional bravery and sustained commitment to public service. They therefore include separate categories for gallantry, distinguished service and meritorious service.

President’s Medal for Distinguished Service

The Centre has also announced the President’s Medal for Distinguished Service (PSM) for 92 personnel. This distinction is awarded for a particularly distinguished record of service.

The recipients include 83 Police Service personnel, 4 Fire Service personnel, 3 Civil Defence and Home Guard personnel, and 2 Correctional Service personnel.

Static GK Tip: The President’s Medal for Distinguished Service recognises an outstanding and distinguished service record rather than a single act of gallantry.

Meritorious Service Medals

A total of 664 Medals for Meritorious Service (MSM) have also been awarded. These medals recognise service marked by resourcefulness, dedication and professional commitment.

Among the recipients are 606 police personnel, 28 fire service personnel, 18 Civil Defence and Home Guard personnel, and 12 correctional service personnel.

Significance of the Awards

The Independence Day honours recognise the contribution of personnel working across internal security, firefighting, civil protection and correctional administration. The large number of gallantry awards from LWE-affected areas and Jammu and Kashmir also underlines the risks encountered by personnel while performing their duties.

Static GK fact: Civil Defence and Home Guards support civil authorities during emergencies, disasters and situations requiring additional manpower and public protection.
