IITM Pune Establishes Dedicated Climate-Tech Incubation Centre
IITM Pune Launches Climate Innovation Hub Under Mission Mausam: The Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pune has launched a dedicated Climate-Tech Incubation Centre to promote innovation in weather forecasting, climate analytics, disaster management, and climate resilience. The initiative was inaugurated alongside the Weather and Climate Innovation Meet for Startups and Entrepreneurs (WISE 2026).
The incubation centre aims to nurture startups developing advanced technologies that convert scientific weather and climate data into practical solutions for industries, governments, and communities.
Static GK fact: The Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) is an autonomous institute under the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) and is headquartered in Pune, Maharashtra.
Developed Under Mission Mausam
The incubation centre has been established under the National Enterprise for Atmospheric Technology (NEAT), an innovation platform created as part of Mission Mausam. The initiative seeks to build a collaborative ecosystem connecting scientists, entrepreneurs, startups, technology innovators, public institutions, and sectoral users.
Its objective is to accelerate the development of indigenous climate technologies that improve weather prediction, climate adaptation, and disaster preparedness across India.
Static GK Tip: Mission Mausam is a flagship initiative of the Ministry of Earth Sciences aimed at strengthening India’s weather forecasting capabilities and climate resilience.
WISE 2026 Promotes Climate Entrepreneurship
The Weather and Climate Innovation Meet for Startups and Entrepreneurs (WISE 2026) served as a national platform to encourage collaboration between climate science and entrepreneurship. The event attracted around 400 participants, including nearly 100 startup founders, researchers, meteorologists, technology experts, mentors, and institutional leaders.
The central theme of the event was “Climate Intelligence to Actionable Business Intelligence,” highlighting the need to transform scientific weather information into practical and commercially viable solutions.
Mission Mausam Strengthens Climate Preparedness
Mission Mausam is designed as a five-year national programme to transform India into a weather-ready and climate-smart nation. The mission focuses on improving forecasting accuracy, expanding observational networks, strengthening numerical weather models, developing user-centric climate services, and ensuring faster dissemination of weather information.
The programme seeks to enhance India’s capacity to minimise the impact of extreme weather events while supporting agriculture, aviation, water resources, disaster management, and other climate-sensitive sectors.
Static GK fact: The Ministry of Earth Sciences is responsible for meteorology, ocean sciences, seismology, polar research, and atmospheric science in India.
Broad Scientific and Institutional Support
The initiative received participation from several leading scientific organisations working in atmospheric and climate sciences. These included the India Meteorological Department (IMD), National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF), National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR), and the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT).
Academic institutions such as IITs, IISER Pune, and IITM Pune also contributed to building a strong research and innovation ecosystem for climate technologies.
Static GK Tip: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) was established in 1875 and is India’s principal agency for weather forecasting and meteorological observations.
Significance of the Initiative
The launch of the Climate-Tech Incubation Centre marks an important step in promoting innovation-driven climate solutions in India. By supporting startups, strengthening scientific collaboration, and encouraging technology-based weather services, the initiative aligns with India’s vision of building a resilient and climate-smart economy.
It also creates opportunities for entrepreneurs to develop cutting-edge solutions that can improve disaster preparedness, resource management, and sustainable development.
