IIT Kanpur to Establish Green Hydrogen Centre
IIT Kanpur to Launch ECOGEN Centre for Green Hydrogen Innovation: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur is set to establish a Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Green Hydrogen under the name ECOGEN (Centre of Excellence on Innovative and Integrated Ecosystem for Green Hydrogen). The initiative marks a significant step towards strengthening India’s clean energy research ecosystem and accelerating the development of sustainable hydrogen technologies.
The project has been approved under the Uttar Pradesh Green Hydrogen Policy 2024 and is supported by the Uttar Pradesh New and Renewable Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA). The centre will focus on research, innovation, and industry collaboration to make green hydrogen more affordable and commercially viable.
Static GK fact: IIT Kanpur was established in 1959 and is recognised as one of India’s premier institutions for engineering, science, and technological research.
Objectives of ECOGEN
The proposed Centre of Excellence aims to develop an integrated ecosystem covering the entire green hydrogen value chain. It will promote advanced scientific research while facilitating the transfer of technology from laboratories to industries.
The major objectives include developing cost-effective hydrogen production technologies, improving hydrogen storage systems, enhancing utilisation across industrial sectors, and supporting India’s transition towards cleaner energy sources.
Why Green Hydrogen Is Important
Green hydrogen is produced by splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen through electrolysis, using electricity generated from renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power. Since the process does not emit carbon dioxide, green hydrogen is considered one of the cleanest fuels for the future.
It has the potential to decarbonise difficult-to-electrify sectors such as steel, fertilisers, refineries, heavy transport, and shipping. Expanding green hydrogen production is therefore essential for reducing dependence on fossil fuels and achieving long-term climate goals.
Static GK Tip: Unlike grey hydrogen, which is produced from natural gas, green hydrogen is generated using renewable energy and produces almost zero carbon emissions.
Major Research Areas
The ECOGEN Centre will undertake interdisciplinary research across multiple areas of the hydrogen ecosystem. Key research domains include hydrogen production, storage technologies, efficient utilisation, and system integration.
Researchers will also work on improving energy efficiency, reducing production costs, developing advanced storage materials, and creating technologies suitable for large-scale industrial applications.
Supporting Uttar Pradesh Green Hydrogen Policy 2024
The establishment of ECOGEN aligns with the objectives of the Uttar Pradesh Green Hydrogen Policy 2024, which seeks to position the state as a leading hub for green hydrogen production and innovation.
The policy encourages research and development, industrial investment, technology commercialisation, skill development, and the creation of sustainable energy infrastructure. By supporting premier institutions such as IIT Kanpur, the state aims to accelerate the adoption of green hydrogen technologies.
Contribution to India’s Clean Energy Mission
The new Centre of Excellence also supports the broader objectives of India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission, which aims to make India a global hub for the production, utilisation, and export of green hydrogen.
The initiative is expected to strengthen scientific research, promote innovation, reduce carbon emissions, and contribute towards India’s target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070. It will also encourage collaboration between academia, industry, and government to build a sustainable hydrogen economy.
Static GK fact: The National Green Hydrogen Mission was launched by the Government of India in 2023 to promote green hydrogen production and reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels.
