IBSAMAR IX 2026 Strengthens Trilateral Naval Cooperation: The ninth edition of IBSAMAR (IBSAMAR IX) concluded on 20 October 2026 at Simon’s Town, South Africa, following ten days of joint naval activities. The Indian Ministry of Defence announced the completion on 21 October 2026.
The exercise brought together the navies of India, Brazil and South Africa to improve operational coordination, strengthen interoperability and promote mutual understanding. Activities were organised into harbour and sea phases, combining professional exchanges with practical maritime training.
Participating Naval Forces
India deployed INS Tarkash, a frontline guided-missile stealth frigate, accompanied by an integral Chetak helicopter. Brazil participated with BNS Barroso and an integral Lynx helicopter.
The South African Navy hosted the exercise and deployed SAS Amatola, SAS King Sekhukhune I and SAS Adam Kok III, along with the submarine SAS Manthatisi.

Theme and Training Activities
The reported theme of IBSAMAR IX was “Stronger Together Towards a Shared Future in the Maritime Domain.” It highlighted the importance of collective preparedness and cooperation in responding to shared maritime challenges.
IBSAMAR exercises can include surface and air warfare, anti-submarine warfare, naval aviation, anti-piracy operations, search and rescue, and damage-control drills. Visit, Board, Search and Seizure (VBSS) training is another maritime security activity that may be undertaken during such exercises.
These activities help participating navies practise coordinated responses to threats, improve communication procedures and exchange operational experience.
Strategic Importance of IBSAMAR
IBSAMAR is a trilateral maritime exercise involving India, Brazil and South Africa under the broader framework of IBSA cooperation. It provides a platform for naval engagement among three major democracies located in different regions of the Global South.
The exercise supports maritime security, professional exchanges and cooperation in protecting sea routes. It also reflects the importance of maintaining open and secure oceans amid challenges such as piracy, illegal maritime activity and threats to commercial shipping.
Static GK Tip: IBSA stands for India, Brazil and South Africa. It is a cooperation forum among the three countries and is distinct from BRICS, although all three are also BRICS members.
History of the Exercise
According to the supplied report, the first IBSAMAR exercise was held in South Africa in 2008. Subsequent editions have provided opportunities for the three navies to practise joint operations and strengthen professional relationships.
The 2026 edition continued this cooperation through harbour engagements and sea-based activities, reinforcing the role of multilateral naval exercises in regional and international maritime security.
