Nationwide Health Assessment
Household Health Survey Shows Rising Lifestyle Diseases in India: The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) released the ‘Household Social Consumption: Health’ Survey under the 80th round of the National Sample Survey (NSS). The survey covered the period from January to December 2025.
It provides a comprehensive picture of India’s health status, focusing on disease patterns, healthcare access, and insurance coverage across rural and urban areas.
Static GK fact: The National Sample Survey (NSS) is one of India’s largest socio-economic survey mechanisms, launched in 1950.
Rise in Reported Ailments
The survey found that 13.1% of individuals reported suffering from ailments in a 15-day reference period, compared to 7.5% in 2017-18. This marks a significant increase in health reporting or disease prevalence.
The rise indicates better awareness and reporting, but also signals increasing health challenges among the population.
Age-wise Hospitalization Trends
The hospitalization rate was highest among individuals aged 60 years and above, reaching 8.1%. This reflects the higher vulnerability of the elderly population to health complications.
Younger age groups showed relatively lower hospitalization rates, indicating age-related health risks remain a key concern.
Shift Towards Lifestyle Diseases
A major trend observed is the decline in infectious diseases and a rise in Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs). Conditions like hypertension, diabetes, and thyroid disorders showed the highest contribution.
After the age of 30 years, cardiovascular and endocrine/metabolic diseases were most commonly reported. This highlights changing lifestyle patterns and increased stress-related health issues.
Static GK Tip: Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) are responsible for over 60% of deaths in India.
Improvements in Maternal Healthcare
The survey recorded nearly 96% institutional deliveries, indicating strong progress in maternal healthcare services. This reflects the success of government initiatives promoting safe childbirth.
Programs like Janani Suraksha Yojana have contributed to increased hospital-based deliveries, reducing maternal and infant mortality.
Expansion of Health Insurance
Health insurance coverage has expanded significantly, especially in rural areas. A majority of people are enrolled in government-sponsored schemes.
This reflects the impact of schemes like Ayushman Bharat, which aim to provide affordable healthcare access to economically weaker sections.
Static GK fact: Ayushman Bharat is one of the world’s largest public health insurance schemes, launched in 2018.
