PM Modi Opens Global Fintech Fest 2026
Global Fintech Fest 2026 Highlights Next Generation Financial Innovation: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Global Fintech Fest 2026 in Mumbai on September 8, 2026, placing financial inclusion, technological innovation and consumer confidence at the centre of India’s fintech agenda.
Addressing global fintech leaders and investors, the Prime Minister urged the sector to move beyond digital payments and expand into credit, insurance, savings and pensions. He also highlighted agentic artificial intelligence, tokenisation and quantum technology as important technologies likely to shape the next phase of financial services.
India’s Fintech Growth and Economic Progress
The Prime Minister highlighted India’s economic resilience amid global uncertainties, pointing to 7.8% economic growth during April–June 2026.
He also referred to India’s sovereign rating being upgraded to the A- category by a Japanese credit rating agency, attributing the improvement to structural reforms and macroeconomic stability.
Static GK fact: Fintech refers to the application of technology to financial services such as payments, lending, insurance, investment and banking.
UPI Becomes a Global Digital Payments Platform
Unified Payments Interface (UPI) remained a major focus of the address. The Prime Minister noted that UPI completed 10 years on August 25, 2026, marking a decade of transformation in India’s digital payments ecosystem.
UPI processed more than 24 billion transactions in August 2026 and was operating across 11 countries. The government wants greater interoperability between UPI and payment systems in other nations, particularly those with substantial Indian diaspora populations and strong trade relationships.
Such cross-border connectivity could help reduce remittance costs, speed up transfers and make international payments more convenient.
Static GK Tip: NPCI operates UPI, which enables interoperable real-time bank-to-bank digital payments through participating financial institutions.
Global Fintech Fest 2026
The Global Fintech Fest (GFF) has developed into a major international platform for discussions on financial technology since its beginning in 2020. It provides a forum for showcasing Indian fintech solutions, encouraging innovation and creating partnerships between developed and emerging economies.
The event is organised by PCI, NPCI and FCC, with participation from institutions including MeitY, Department of Financial Services, NITI Aayog, RBI, SEBI, IFSCA and PFRDA.
GFF 2026 Focuses on AI, Tokenisation and Quantum Technology
The 2026 edition gives prominence to three emerging technologies.
Agentic AI can enable financial systems to analyse information, make decisions and execute tasks with greater autonomy. However, governance, accountability and human oversight remain essential.
Tokenisation involves representing assets through digital units that can potentially support fractional ownership, faster settlement and interoperability.
Quantum technology could transform financial services through advanced computational capabilities and quantum-safe cryptography. It may also assist with complex financial risk analysis and optimisation problems.
India’s Digital Public Infrastructure Foundation
India’s fintech ecosystem has been strengthened by Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI), particularly through Aadhaar, UPI, mobile connectivity and the JAM Trinity.
As of August 26, 2026, the number of Jan Dhan accounts exceeded 59.15 crore. Aadhaar registrations had crossed 144 crore by March 2026.
UPI recorded 24,509 million transactions in August 2026, demonstrating the scale of India’s interoperable payment infrastructure. Meanwhile, Aadhaar e-KYC had crossed 2,458 crore transactions by June 29, 2026.
Static GK fact: JAM Trinity refers to Jan Dhan accounts, Aadhaar and Mobile connectivity, which together support financial inclusion and digital delivery of services.
Fintech and Financial Inclusion
The expansion of technology-enabled financial services has contributed to wider access to formal finance. India’s Financial Inclusion Index increased from 43.4 in March 2017 to 70.0 in March 2026.
Platforms and systems such as DigiLocker, Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) and ONDC have further strengthened India’s digital ecosystem.
The next phase of fintech development is expected to focus not merely on transaction volumes but also on ensuring broader access to affordable credit, insurance, pensions and savings products.
Consumer Protection and the Future of Fintech
Rapid technological adoption also creates new responsibilities. As fintech becomes more deeply integrated with everyday financial activity, consumer protection, cybersecurity, data security, transparency and responsible innovation will become increasingly important.
India’s objective is therefore to combine technological leadership with trust and inclusion. Developing globally interoperable standards and protocols could also strengthen India’s position as a major contributor to the international fintech ecosystem.
Conclusion
Global Fintech Fest 2026 underlined India’s transition from a digital-payments success story toward a broader technology-driven financial ecosystem. With UPI, DPI, AI, tokenisation and quantum technologies forming important pillars, the emphasis is increasingly shifting toward inclusive credit, insurance, savings and pension services.
The long-term success of this transformation will depend on balancing innovation with security, regulation, consumer protection and financial inclusion.
