DRDO Armoured Platforms Strengthen India Defence Modernisation: The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has unveiled two advanced armoured platforms in Ahilyanagar, Maharashtra. This development marks a significant step in India’s push for defence modernisation and self-reliance.
The platforms are designed to meet evolving battlefield requirements, offering enhanced mobility, firepower, and protection. They reflect India’s growing focus on indigenous defence capabilities.

Platform design and variants
The newly unveiled systems include both tracked and wheeled variants, enabling adaptability across diverse terrains. These platforms have been developed by the Vehicles Research & Development Establishment (VRDE), a key DRDO laboratory.
Both variants are equipped with an indigenously developed 30 mm crewless turret, enhancing operational safety by reducing human exposure during combat.

Advanced firepower capabilities
A major strength of these platforms lies in their powerful armament systems. The integration of a 30 mm cannon along with a 7.62 mm PKT machine gun ensures strong offensive capability.
Additionally, the platforms can launch Anti-Tank Guided Missiles (ATGMs), making them effective against heavily armoured threats. Advanced targeting systems improve accuracy in modern combat scenarios.
Mobility and protection features
The platforms are designed with a high power-to-weight ratio, ensuring superior speed and agility. Equipped with high-power engines and automatic transmission, they can navigate complex terrains efficiently.
They can climb steep gradients and cross obstacles, making them suitable for varied operational conditions. Protection levels comply with STANAG Level 4 and 5 standards, ensuring resistance against ballistic threats and blasts.
The systems also feature modular protection, enhancing survivability in battlefield environments.

Indigenous manufacturing push
A key highlight is the strong emphasis on indigenous production under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. Currently, the platforms have about 65% indigenous content, which is expected to rise to 90% in the future.
Development has been supported by Indian companies like Tata Advanced Systems Limited and Bharat Forge Limited, along with contributions from MSMEs. This collaboration strengthens India’s defence industrial ecosystem.
Strategic importance
These platforms enhance India’s capability in land warfare and amphibious operations. Their modular design allows deployment across multiple combat roles, increasing operational flexibility.
They also contribute to reducing dependence on foreign defence imports. This aligns with India’s broader goal of becoming a global defence manufacturing hub.
