Dr Srinivasa Kumar Tummala Takes Charge of Earth Sciences Ministry: Dr Srinivasa Kumar Tummala has assumed charge as the Secretary of the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), Government of India. He brings more than three decades of experience in oceanography, remote sensing, satellite-based ocean studies, coastal hazard mitigation and disaster management.
He succeeds Dr N. Kalaiselvi, who had been holding additional charge after Dr M. Ravichandran, the previous regular Secretary of the ministry.

Expertise in Ocean and Disaster Sciences
Dr Tummala has worked extensively on ocean information services, early warning systems and coastal risk reduction. His experience covers both scientific research and the operational delivery of information useful for communities and disaster-management agencies.
His expertise assumes significance as India expands programmes related to the Deep Ocean Mission, climate modelling, ocean observation and multi-hazard early warning systems.
Role in India’s Tsunami Warning System
One of Dr Tummala’s major contributions came after the Indian Ocean tsunami of 2004. He served as the Project Manager of India’s Tsunami Early Warning System at the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS).
The system strengthened India’s capacity to detect and communicate tsunami threats and contributed to regional disaster preparedness. His work also supported INCOIS’s recognition as a global Tsunami Service Provider.

Leadership at INCOIS
Dr Tummala has served as Director of ESSO-INCOIS, Hyderabad, since August 2020. Under his leadership, the institution has continued providing ocean-based information and advisory services for different users.
Important services include Potential Fishing Zone (PFZ) advisories, coral reef bleaching alerts, multi-hazard vulnerability mapping and ocean observation services.
These systems are particularly valuable for fishermen, coastal communities, policymakers and disaster-management authorities.
Awards and Scientific Contributions
Dr Tummala has received recognition for his work in geoscience, geospatial technology and disaster mitigation.
He received the National Geoscience Award in 2010 from the Ministry of Mines for his contribution to India’s tsunami early warning capabilities. Earlier, in 2008, he received the Indian National Geospatial Award from the Indian Society of Remote Sensing.
His academic record includes more than 100 research papers published in international scientific journals, reflecting his extensive contribution to ocean and earth sciences.
Significance of the Appointment
His appointment comes when India is strengthening its capabilities in ocean science, climate prediction, disaster preparedness and early warning systems.
His experience in linking scientific research with operational warning services could support India’s efforts to improve resilience against tsunamis, cyclones, coastal hazards and other natural disasters.
